Carson City


NDOT hosts freeway run


On Saturday, the Nevada Department of Transportation is hosting a "Freeway Walk," where the public can walk or run the entire length of the soon-to-be-open freeway. The event starts at 9 a.m. and runs until noon.


The event is free and begins at the southernmost area of the freeway, off Highway 50. Participants are asked to park at Mulligan's.




Cops take orders to benefit Olympics


Carson area law enforcement officers will don aprons over their badges and trade their batons for serving trays in today's Tip-A-Cop fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics.


From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and again from 5-9 p.m. Carson City and Douglas County deputies will serve food to patrons at Applebee's in Carson City and at Chili's in Douglas County.


The deputies are having a competition to see who can raise the most money in tips for the Special Olympics. The winner will receive a trophy and bragging rights for the year.


Special Olympics Nevada provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Special Olympics Nevada currently serves 2,200 athletes. Programs are entirely free.




Lutheran school hosts 'Under the Tuscan Moon'


Sierra Lutheran High School is hosting its fourth annual dinner and auction benefit, "An Evening Under the Tuscan Moon," at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Plaza Convention Center, 211 E. Ninth St., in Carson City.


Tickets cost $40 per person, $75 a couple, or you can sponsor a table for eight at Gold level, $650, or Silver level, $500. There will be both a live and silent auction.


This dinner and auction supports the Sierra Lutheran High School students. Seats are limited and reservations must be made no later than Monday. Call 782-0060.




Douglas County


Methodist church offers square dancing lessons


Learn modern square dancing and line dancing on Tuesdays at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville. From 6:30-8 p.m. is new-dancer instruction, and from 8-9:30 p.m. is continuation instruction.

Elementary school seeks volunteers for social


PiƱon Hills Elementary School in Douglas County, is looking for volunteers for its ice-cream social fundraiser, the school's biggest fundraiser of the year.


The school needs volunteers, donations, and sponsors 5:30-8:30 p.m.May 19. The next meeting is 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the library.

Commission to meet on south-county water issues


Washoe Board of County Commissioners meet at 9 a.m. Thursday, regarding the county's position on models and related issues of acquisition and management of water rights, water conservation, and water facilities in southern Washoe County. Call 328-2000.




Photography lecture set


Lee Brumbaugh, curator of photography for the Nevada Historical Society, will give a free lecture on Reno photographer Roy Curtis from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 15 at the society in Reno. Call 688-1190.
