Carson native makes dean's list at New York university

Amanda Carlson made the dean's list at the University of Rochester, New York, for the fall 2005 semester. Carlson, a graduate of Carson High School, is the daughter of Don and Gigi Deselms and Randy Carlson. She is majoring in political science.

Lyon Parks and Recreation needs help with all-night graduation party

Central Lyon Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a drug and alcohol free all-night graduation party on June 8 for the 2006 graduates of Dayton High School. The event will be put on with help of businesses and parents within the community and is estimated to cost $15,000. Donations are needed and are tax-deductible. Carson woman on the dean's list at Illinois university

Lori Brio, of Carson City, made the dean's list for the fall 2005 semester at the University of St. Francis in Illinois. Students must have a 3.5 grade-point average or higher and taken at least 12 credit hours.

Community Band meets March 12

The Capital City Community Band will feature student musicians at their annual Children's Concert scheduled for 3 p.m. March 12 in the Boldrick Theater in the Carson Community Center. This concert is presented in celebration of 'Music In Our Schools Month,' but is not for children only. Audiences of all ages will enjoy the variety of music presented by the band.

The band will perform Mozart's "Magic Flute" as a tribute to Mozart's 150th anniversary, along with traditional marches and concert band music. For more information about the concert, call director Richard Doede at 883-2219.

Auditory-integration training in Reno

Kymberleigh Herwill-Levin, who once worked with autistic children in Douglas County, will be in Reno for nine days and available for auditory-integration training, which uses tones set at certain pitches to help desensitize children to the ones they test sensitive for. AIT can also be used to treat depression, anxiety and other disorders, she said. For information, call her at (213) 399-1708.

Investment lecture scheduled for Wednesday

The basics of understanding and using investment statistics will be taught in a free 7:30 p.m. class scheduled for Wednesday in Room 103 of the Reynolds Center for Technology at Western Nevada Community College. Featured will be Timothy Hope, of Navellier Applied Research, who has more than 11 years experience in the securities industry. Daughter of Minden residents makes dean's list at St. Louis university

Selena Valenti, the daughter of Stephanie and Nicholas Valenti of Minden, was named to the dean's list for the fall 2005 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. Valenti is a graduate of Douglas High School and is enrolled in the university's Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. To qualify for the dean's list in the school of design, students must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or above and be full-time.

Safe Graduation Program needs funds for grad night

The Safe Graduation Program has occurred in Carson City for the past 18 years with support from the school's parent-teacher-student association, the Carson City Sheriff's Department, the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety and local businesses. Not one Carson High School graduate fatality has occurred on graduate night since the program started in 1988, but the 36-hour event is costly. Organizers are looking for donations. Douglas students participate in Mathcounts

More than 80 students from the region participated in the Mathcounts competition recently, including Justin Donat, Evan Kleiner and Ben Syang from Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School and Selena Kaffer, Nolan Nicholson, Bart Niday, Amelia Ritger and Katie Palmer from Carson Valley Middle School.

Four of those students finished in the top 20: Ben, 16th; Evan, 11th; Selena, sixth; and Bart, third. Bart and Selena will go to state on March 18.

The team from Carson Valley Middle School won first place in the team competition and best new team award.

The team will go to state for the state competition. Bart also won third place in the final countdown round which is the oral head-to-head competition.

Hike or walk the Silver Saddle Ranch

The public is invited to attend a hike/walk of the Silver Saddle Ranch at 9 a.m. March 11.

Participants are asked to meet in the Silver Saddle Ranch parking lot off Carson River Road, and to bring water.
