Fred Daniels wins Toastmaster contest


Fred Daniels was the winner of the Kit Carson Toastmasters Club annual speech contest held Tuesday at Grandma Grandma Hattie's Restaurant. Runners-up were Ron Burke, Bob May and Frank Taylor.

Book set in north state comes out Wednesday


Mary Jean Kelsos, latest Mystery novel, "Goodbye is Forever," will be available Wednesday, according to Wings E-press Inc. The book is set in Reno, Virginia City, Carson City and the surrounding historical sites, and is available in e-book and paperback.


Senior Center hosts appraisal fair


The Carson City Senior Center is hosting an Appraisal Faire from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 4. Furniture, silver, paintings, fine art, pottery, textiles, costume and fine jewelry, dolls, toys, clothing, and accessories can be appraised for $5 an item. Call 883-0703.

Davis Gallery has Open House

Reno


Children's snow- tracking event set


Children can learn to identify animal tracks in the snow and search for other clues of animal activity during a ranger-led hike and nature program at 1 p.m. March 4 in Galena Creek Regional Park, in Reno.


The program will last about an hour and a half. Participants should be prepared to hike in snow and be dressed for warm weather. Call 849-2511.


Cooperative Extension offers gardening classes


The UNR Cooperative Extension is offering a series of free gardening classes entitled "Gardening in Nevada."


The next class is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bartley Ranch in Reno. It is called "Ten Common Garden Pests and How to Control them."


At 5:30 p.m. March 9, at the Cooperative Extension office in Carson City, 2621 Northgate Lane Suite 12, there will be another class, "Weed Identification and Control."

Lake Tahoe


'Bears by the Lake' to benefit charitable organizations


Local charitable organizations are urged to apply by March 15 to receive funds from the first ever "Bears by the Lake. A CeleBEARtion!" featuring between 35-40 life-size fiberglass bear forms decorated by regional and local artists.


An online auction of the bears will take place, with a minimum bid of $2,000 each, in September after a public display from May 17 through Labor Day.


The funds will be donated to local charities.

Teddy Bear Tea to benefit reading program


The Churchill County Library and CC Communications Independent Telecommunications Pioneer Association will hold the Teddy Bear Tea on April 29.


The library is accepting donations of financial help for the Summer Reading Program, which the Teddy Bear Tea benefits, and raffle prizes from local merchants and residents.
