Jim Gibson to speak to Democrats tonight


Carson City Democrats will hear from gubernatorial candidate Jim Gibson tonight.


The Henderson mayor will address the party's capital organization beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the SNEA building, 709 E. Robinson St. Call 841-3367, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.




Assembly members discuss health-care reform


All public employees are invited to attend a meeting with Assemblywoman Bonnie Parnell, D-Carson City; and Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea, R-Eureka, to discuss health-care reform.


The meeting is 5:30-7 p.m. March 8 in the SNEA/AFSCME Local 4041 conference room at 709 E. Robinson St.

Muscle Powered seeks volunteers school walks


Muscle Powered is seeking volunteers to help establish Safe Routs to School programs at Mark Twain and Seeliger elementary schools. The purpose of the program is to fight the rising rates of childhood obesity and improve children's health.

State Museum hosts reception for display


The Nevada State Museum will host a free opening reception for "Havens in a Heartless World: Virginia City Saloons and the Archeology of the Wild West" from 5-7:30 p.m. March 9.

Community Chest reopens under new name Friday


The Community Chest thrift store will reopen with a new look and a new name Friday. The store will now be called New Beginnings and its grand reopening is 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the store, 991 S. C St. All proceeds from the thrift shop are used for programs in the area such as the Food Closet. Call 847-9311 ext. 110.




Virginia City Chamber hosts 'A Night at the Oscars' dinner, viewing


The Academy Awards Bash: Comstock Style will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Mandarin Garden Restaurant in Virginia City. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.


Cost is $25 and includes a four-course buffet dinner and dessert. Cocktails and champagne will be available. There will be a contest over the Academy Award winners, and a silent auction will be held during commercial breaks. Call 847-0311 or 847-9288.
