Nevada softball loses assistant
RENO - Matt Meuchel, associate head coach of the University of Nevada softball team, has become the first assistant coach hired by Oklahoma State's new head coach Rich Wieligman.
Meuchel will be OSU's defensive coach and assist coach Wieligman in hitting as well.
"We are going to miss Matt a lot, he has truly become a part of my family," Nevada head coach Michelle Gardner said. "Matt has been with me from the beginning and has become my right hand around here. This is going to be a great opportunity for him, and we all wish him the best of luck in this new stage of his career."
Meuchel came on board at Nevada just after the program was reinstated back in 2003. Having been the top assistant to Gardner for four years, Meuchel helped build everything that the program has become which included a WAC Tournament Championship last season.
The Missoula, Mont., native was involved with every aspect of the program at Nevada in everything from recruiting, to coaching, to maintaining the home field at Idlewild Park. During his tenure as hitting instructor at Nevada, Meuchel has seen his athletes break more than 12 school records, and the team has consistently finished in the top three in the WAC in every offensive category each of the last four seasons.
"He is a hard worker," Wieligman said. "He is a great recruiter and will help us on the west coast since he has been in Nevada the last few years. He is a good coach and can coach both offense and defense."
Meuchel has an extensive background of serving many different capacities. Before coming to Nevada, he worked at McNeese State as an assistant for one season in 2002. He served as the recruiting coordinator and infield coach, in addition to in-game coaching and other administrative responsibilities. He also worked on the Greek Olympic Team Staff during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.
Before working at McNeese State, he worked for his alma mater Arizona State in 2001. He was a volunteer coach responsible for coaching the outfielders and coordinating video analysis. During his time as a volunteer coach, the Sun Devils were ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation, finished 36-22 and advanced to the semifinal game of the Region III Tournament.
Youth football officials are needed
With the youth football season a month away, the official in charge of recruiting and training officials said more individuals are needed.
Chris Whitbeck said more officials are needed in every community that has Pop Warner football or Sierra Youth Football League programs.
A clinic to train new and returning officials will be held Aug. 12 in Reno. A mandatory clinic for high school football officials will be held this weekend.
According to Whitbeck, the Aug. 12 clinic will review rules, and officials will discuss field techniques. The clinic will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Reno's Sierra View Mall (formerly the Old Town Mall) on South Virginia Street.
The recruitment for new officials helps programs keep the costs down.
Whitbeck said when officials are brought into an area, then the local league must pay for the mileage, which is 40 cents per mile.
"I would like to have a crew in every town," he said.
Generally, Whitbeck said the younger teams require a two-man crew. The older teams usually have three-man crews. Whitbeck said four-man crews are used in games that have 12-minute quarters.
