Nevada Yankees drop a doubleheader

The Nevada Yankees dropped a doubleheader to the Marin (Calif.) Merchants at Governor's Field on Saturday, losing the opener 15-5 and the nightcap 11-3.

Former Carson High standout Eric Melendez pitched will in the nightcap, allowing no earned runs on three hits over five innings. Douglas High's and Western Nevada Community College's Chad Walling also had three hits.

Marin took advantage of the Yankees' only error in the second inning to score five unearned runs, with the big blow coming on a three-run home run to make it 5-1.

But Melendez went on to retire the last 10 batters he faced. He also got out of a jam in the first when Marin had the bases loaded with one out with a pop out and a flyball.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first when Ryan Simpson doubled and scored on WNCC's Taylor Meiras' single. The Yankees cut the deficit to 5-3 in the third. Melendez and Walling each singled and scored on Meiras' two-run single.

Meiras had two hits and former Douglas High standout Jimmy Pierce, Billy Moss and Peter Maes all added a hit.

In the opener, the Yankees scored all of their runs in the sixth. After Pierce was hit by a pitch and Markus Melburg walked to load the bases, Simpson walked to force in a run and Pierced scored on a wild pitch. Moss and Maes walked to force in another run and Meiras hit a two-run single to finish the rally.

Melburg doubled and Brian Peat and Walling each added a hit. Former Carson High standout Wes Osmer pitched a scoreless seventh, retiring all three batters he faced and striking out one.
