Greenlee 5-for-5 as Cardinals defeat Yankees

Brooks Greenlee went 5-for-5 with three doubles, including a two-run double that gave the Carson Cardinals the lead for good as they pulled off their second comeback win over the Nevada Yankees this summer, winning 13-11 on Saturday at Ron McNutt Field.

Actually, the Cardinals came back twice as they overcame 6-0 and 11-10 deficits. Ed Lovelace pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for the win, striking out three.

Kyle Stone began the winning rally with a single in the bottom of the seventh. Paul Cagle was hit by a pitch and Joe Skates walked to load teh bases. Greenlee followed with his two run double and Bryt Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to make it 13-11.

Paul Cagle pitched six solid innings for the Cardinals, allowing four earned runs. But he ran into trouble in the top of the seventh after Carson High graduate Adam Anderson singled to give the Yankees runners at first and second with no outs.

A wild pitch gave the Yankees runners at second and third. Peter Maes reached on an infield single and two runs scored on a throwing error on the play. Douglas High graduate and South Dakota State's Cal Lewis walked.

With the runners going, Tyler Fradd laid down a sacrifice bunt and Maes scored all the way from second. Brian Peat followed with an RBI single to give the Yankees an 11-10 lead.

Douglas High's and Western Nevada Community College's Chad Walling led off the game against Cagle with a bloop single that should have been caught. After Maes' sacrifice bunt, WNCC's Taylor Meiras hit an RBI single to make it 1-0.

In the second, CHS graduate Eric Melendez singled, Walling hit a two-run single and the Yankees took advantage of two errors to score five runs to take a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Tony Fagan doubled and Markus Adams singled. Adams stole second and Fagan came home on a throwing error on the play to make it 6-1.

In the fourth, Fagan singled, David Leid walked and Adams laid down a sacrifice bunt to move up both runners. Stone hit an RBI grounder and both Fagan and Leid scored on an throwing error on the play to make it 6-3.

Walling, who saw limited action on the mound this past year for WNCC, was the starting pitcher for the Yankees and allowed two earned runs through four innings. But he ran into trouble in the fifth when Greenlee and Lewis hit back-to-back doubles to make it 7-4.

Leid and Drew Good hit RBI singles to make it 7-6. But Chuck Geffert threw out Leid trying to score on Leid's single and Meiras blocked the plate to end the inning.

In the sixth, Johnny Hazeltine doubled and Skates singled to chase Walling.

Greenlee hit an RBI double, Lewis had a two-run single and Adams hit an RBI single to make it 10-7.

Fagan, Lewis and Adams all had two hits for the Cardinals while Walling and Anderson had two hits for the Yankees. CHS graduate Wes Osmer pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out four, and added a hit.
