A funeral Mass for John C. Calhoun, 89, a Carson City resident since 1963, will be noon Friday at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with the Rev. Jerry Hanley officiating. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m.-noon the day of the service.

Mr. Calhoun died June 24, 2006, in Carson City. He was born July 17, 1916, in Houston to the Rev. Henry Calhoun and Sofia Calhoun.

He married Maria Calhoun on Jan. 7, 1964, in Carson City.

Before moving to Carson City, Mr. Calhoun lived in Los Angeles.

He graduated from high school in 1938 in Houston, and from the Utilities Engineering Institute in Chicago. He attended Perry Seminary in Houston.

He worked at Darling's Farm in Carson City, and then at the St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church as a custodian for 28 years. He retired in 1985. He was a member of the St. Teresa Catholic church and the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Calhoun served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by six siblings.

Among his survivors are his wife of Carson City; nephew, Raphael Calhoun of San Francisco; and nieces Maria and Pauline, both of San Francisco.

Burial will take place at the Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
