Plenty of options to celebrate St. Paddy's in style

St. Patrick's Day is Friday, so the green beer thing is on, along with corned beef and cabbage. Mallard's is having its "microbrew" tasting the day before (on Thursday) at 6 p.m. (reservations 885-1019), so you know where we'll be. The Station Grill always serves great Irish fare that day, and we see that Stew's Sportatorium will be having a rousing party on Friday (along with probably every other pub in town) ... so you have no excuse to stay home and mope. Just remember that great Irish saying, "May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead."

Toga time ... and other essential things to know ... throw on your old sheets and help Dorothy Tate celebrate her birthday on the Ides of March (and, were they still with us, Josie Graham, Katharine Quilici and Pat Nixon this week, too ... we want to remember them as well, otherwise they'll haunt us).

Is Nevada hot, or what? Winning their third WAC title in a row and now going dancing with the NCAA. Congratulations to Mark Fox and the whole crew. You are doing us proud. Here's to six more wins this year (and don't you hope we're psychic?).

The picture of the new casino going in where Bodine's was makes Jethro's casino look positively palatial.

Ann McCarthy tells us "Little Johnny knows his numbers ... he told the teacher 'Yes, my father taught me.' So the teacher asked him, 'What comes after three?' 'Four,' answers little Johnny. 'What comes after six?' 'Seven,' he replies. 'Very good,' she says. 'Your father did a good job. What comes after 10?' 'A jack,' says Johnny." Ahhhh ... Nevada's version of "No Child Left Behind," no doubt...

Carolyn got a private tour of the new Dillard's at Summit Sierra last week given by Dave Kerfeld, senior superintendent of Q&D Construction. It's located at the Highway 395 and Mount Rose junction south of Reno, and she says it's absolutely lovely inside ... oodles of space and beautiful decor. And, of course, lots of stuff to buy. Soon, there will be a new movie theater and restaurants, etc., etc., etc. And Reba McEntire will be there Thursday night to preview her new line of clothes. Hallelujah ... another place to spend our money.

The Big C was also noticing a spot on TV the other night bemoaning the fact that several policemen had been killed by motorists hitting them while they were giving out tickets at the side of the road. What she has noticed lately is that when they pull people over, they park on an angle, in the middle of the street, or out in the road, thus causing a traffic hazard themselves ... it's a wonder not more of them are hurt. It might behoove them to take more care when they pull someone over and put themselves less at risk ... food for thought.

Jackie Sandoval has written to us with a real poser. We asked around and couldn't find the answer, so maybe you can. As you drive up Goni Road, between College Parkway and Arrowhead, you are driving up "Harvey's Hill." Jackie wants to know, "Who is Harvey, and why is the hill named for him?" IMWTK...

Lots of stuff ... we love Steve Zuelke (just because); congratulations to Father Jerry...he just celebrated the 27th anniversary of his ordination on March 10; the Western Nevada Astronomical Society will be having its general membership meeting tomorrow night at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at 7 p.m. (445-3311) ... everyone is welcome; Friday is the deadline for directors to present a play to Proscenium Player's for next year's season...call 883-1976 for details; and Carson High Performing Arts will be presenting "Seussical (the musical)," beginning March 24. This is a musical comedy for the entire family starring Dr. Seuss's famous characters and stories. For information and tickets, call 887-0438. "You can't go wrong," says the Cat in the Hat..."You can't go wrong for saying that." (Actually, the C in the H never said that, but we're sure he would've, if he could've).

Ken Fraser tells us about "the woman who was sitting at a bar, when an extremely handsome man walked in. She stared at him, and before she knew what was happening, he walked over to her and whispered in her ear, 'I'll do anything you want me to do for $20, on one condition' (there are always conditions). Flabbergasted, she asked what the condition was. 'You have to tell me what you want in just three words.' The woman thought about it a moment, then reached into her purse, withdrew a $20 bill, and pressed it into his hand along with her home address. She looked deeply into his beautiful, aquamarine eyes, and very slowly, with great meaning, whispered into his ear...'Clean my house.'" We're next...

Carson City has some mighty fine young people serving in Iraq ... we just learned that 1Lt. Ehren Miller, son of Jeannette Miller, is over there, too. He's a classmate of Tyrel Armstrong and is looking forward to contacting him soon.

Kim Morgan informed us that St. Peter's Episcopal Church is sponsoring a 2006 Lenten lecture series by Dr. Walter Wink, renowned theologian and peace fellow. It will be held March 24-26 at the Brewery Arts Center. The Friday night lecture at 7 p.m. is free, and the Saturday workshop (9:30-3) will be $85. Dr. Wink is known worldwide for his work on nonviolent resistance and as a Biblical scholar and author. For information, call Kim at 883-1681, and for anyone coming from out of town, the Piñon Plaza has set aside a block of rooms to accommodate those wanting to stay overnight.

We end with an Irish blessing from Mysty Wycoff. "May there always be work for your hands to do May your purse always hold a coin or two. May the sun always shine on you windowpane. May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain. May the hand of a friend always be near to you. May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you." And a "top o' the week" to you all.
