Douglas High graduate Shawn Estes was sharp in his last tuneup for the regular season as he was the winning pitcher for the San Diego Padres on Thursday in an 8-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.
Estes allowed one unearned run through four innings, striking out seven and walking one while allowing five hits.
WNCC soccer tops in academics
The Western Nevada Community College women's soccer team was one of 13 colleges in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association recognized for academic excellence.
WNCC was honored as one of the fall academic teams-of-the-year. WNCC was ranked 12th in the nation with an overall team grade point average of 3.04.
