Last fall, the Western Nevada Community College women's soccer team earned an overall grade point average of 3.04 while the baseball team posted a combined 3.0, out of a possible 4.0.

"Western strongly supports the academic achievement of our student athletes," dean of student services and athletic director John Kinkella said. "The high expectations we have set for our student athletes continue to be met. We are delighted as much by their academic progress as by their league championships."

WNCC baseball coach D.J. Whittemore and Wildcat women's soccer coach Hillary Arthur continue to mandate ample study time and to stress the need for academic progress, Kinkella said. "Additionally, counseling services works with the coaches to carefully track the progress of the student athletes," he said.

The fall academic stars of the baseball team included middle infielder Kevin Schlange with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. and relief pitcher Dan Grubbs with a 3.71. Soccer academic stars were Courtney Lenhart with a 3.95 and Ali Pyne with a 3.63.

The soccer team won the Scenic West Athletic Conference Region XVIII Championship in their second year and Arthur was named the conference's Coach of the Year. The baseball team finished with a Scenic West Conference Championship and a Top 20 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association's final poll in its inaugural season.
