Joseph Eiben has filed to run for Carson City Board of Supervisors Ward 3. He is the third candidate to file for the seat, after incumbent Pete Livermore and Neil Weaver.
Eiben, 61, came to Carson City in 2003 from the Sunland-Tujunga section of Los Angeles to visit a friend. He fell in love with the community and, with his wife, Pennie, quickly bought a home here.
"I was sold on this community, it has so much to offer." Eiben said. "And everybody is so warm."
The couple came to live in Carson in 2004. Eiben said he believes his more than 20 previous years involved in community affairs will help this city.
Eiben was a founding member of his neighborhood council in the Los Angeles area. It was one local body among dozens created as part of an effort by that city's leaders to better connect with its millions of far-flung residents, he said.
He also was president of that community's parks advisory board and the Rotary Club, and active in a variety local and state political campaigns in California.
Eiben has continued his community involvement since moving to Carson. He is the Carson City chapter director of the Nevada Independent Conservative Political Action Committee. He also is in the Rotary and Elks clubs, serves on the Brewery Arts Center bylaws committee, and is active in the city's downtown business association. Pennie is the owner of Razzel Dazzel Hats & Things, a downtown business.
His emphasis, if elected, will be on protecting and enhancing the city's quality of life. Being from Southern California, he saw how bad ideas can harm communities, and he wants to help Carson avoid those problems, he said.
Among his concerns: Helping the business community prosper while ensuring developers don't build projects that mar the city's landscape, he said.
Eiben's experience as an activist makes him "more useful as an official than as helper or volunteer," he said.
He retired from AT&T after 27 years as a manager there. He also worked as an information technology specialist for the public library system in Burbank, Calif., before moving to Carson.
Eiben has a bachelor's degree in business management and a master's degree in telecommunications.
He was in the U.S. Navy.
The Eibens have four grown children. Three of them live in California and the fourth also is in the Navy. During his free time, Eiben enjoys photography.
The filing deadline for candidates is 5 p.m. Friday.
