Carson City's new postmaster should be selected soon, following Doug Hval's departure last month.

The 46-year-old Carson City man took over as the Reno postmaster on April 24. He was selected in March to direct all the postal service operations in Reno.

"The selection process is under way, and within a month a new postmaster of Carson City should be selected," Hval said Tuesday.

Silver Springs Postmaster Richard Curry took over the Carson City operations after Hval's departure. Curry said he will not be applying for the Carson City job.

Hval said it was a hard decision to take the Reno job, but his home will remain in Carson City.

"I've had mixed emotions. Carson City has been very good to me, and it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

He has one child who is entering Eagle Valley Middle School next year and another who is graduating from Carson High School. His wife works for the school district.

Hval started as Carson City postmaster in August 1998. He was postmaster in Lincoln City, Ore., before moving to Carson City. He began his postal career in 1983 as a clerk carrier in Tillamook, Ore., after serving four years in the U.S. Marine Corps.
