The former manager of a Sparks post office was selected as Carson City postmaster.

Jerry DePaoli, 44, filled the position left vacant by Doug Hval, who took over as the Reno postmaster on April 24.

DePaoli was hired May 19 for the top job at Carson City's main post office and started work this week. He had managed Vista Station in Sparks. DePaoli started as a Reno mail carrier in 1984. He was promoted to supervisor in Sparks in 1989.

"We've recently moved under the Western area, from the Pacific area," he said. "The Western area motto is customer service."

He is married to Kim DePaoli and they have four children ranging in age from 25 to 16.

Silver Springs Postmaster Richard Curry took over the Carson City operations after Hval's departure. Hval, 46, will remain in Carson City despite the job change.

He has one child who is entering Eagle Valley Middle School next year and another who is graduating from Carson High School. His wife works for the school district.

Hval started as Carson City postmaster in August 1998.

DePaoli said he is looking into moving to the area.

"We just want to serve the customers as best as we can."
