The Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, a fundraiser for the Carson City Democratic Central Committee, will be held Friday at the Carson City Nugget.


A hosted cocktail reception will begin at 6 p.m., with a dinner and program to follow at 7 p.m.


The cost is $100, or $45 for the dinner and program only. Reserve a table for eight for $325.


Guest speakers include Jack Carter, Democratic senatorial candidate; and Jill Derby, 2nd congressional district candidate.

Yard sale to benefit animal-rescue group


Douglas Animal Welfare Group will host its fifth annual DAWG Tag Sale 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 1011 Tillman Lane in Gardnerville Ranchos.


Alpine/Douglas Chapter of Thrivant is co-sponsoring the event, which is DAWG's biggest fundraiser of the year.


The yard sale features a broad range of books, tools, accessories, furniture, jewelry, accessories, and kitchen, bath, and bedroom items.


The mission of DAWG is to better the lives and improve the adaptability of animals at the Douglas County Animal Shelter. Volunteers walk and socialize with the animals, help educate the community about responsible pet ownership. Fundraisers such as the DAWG Tag Sale help pay for spay and neutering, medical care and supplies for the shelter animals.

Cancer-survivor workshops to be held in Nevada


The needs of Nevada cancer survivors will be measured through a series of 25 town hall-style meetings to be held across the state.


In Nevada, more than 11,100 residents per year are diagnosed with cancer, with a mortality rate of 4,600, according to the Nevada Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. While cancer is the No. 2 cause of premature deaths nationally, in Nevada, cancer claims the most years of life, and 40 percent of residents will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, according to the Centers for Disease Control.


The meetings scheduled to date include:


• Saturday: 6 p.m.- Reno/Sparks at the ACS Relay for Life at Reed High School in Sparks. 356-8800.


• Sunday: 11a.m.-3 p.m. - Carson City, at Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. 885-4281.


• June 17: 10 a.m. - Minden/Gardnerville at the Carson Valley Medical Center. 356-8800


• June 17: 6 p.m.- Fallon, at the Relay for Life at the Churchill County Junior High School. 426-2608.


A nonprofit organization, NVCI has raised more than $70 million in private community financial support, with additional support of a repayable $50 million construction bond for NVCI's 142,000-square-foot flagship research and care facility in the Summerlin district of Las Vegas. which opened in September.

Celebrate Pony Express Week in Silver Springs


The Silver Stage Friends of the Library will be holding the Pony Express Wine and Art Shindig from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Buckland Station to celebrate Nevada history. Cost is $15 per person and $20 per couple.
