Fun Walk/Run to Como Peak helps youth programs

A 5K, 10K, 2-mile walk and 1-mile fun run will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday off Old Dayton Valley Road with the route heading toward Como Peak.

Entry fee is $25 per person or $40 for youth and adults walking or running the course together; $8 for the 1-mile fun run.

Fees are due today. Late entries are $30 per person. Entry fee includes T-shirt, raffle and refreshments.

Proceeds benefit Central Lyon County Youth Programs. Call 246-0320.

Fernley

Youth city council vacancies open

The Parks and Recreation Department is accepting applications to fill vacancies on the City of Fernley Youth City Council. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. today.

Youth between the ages of 13 and 18 who live in Fernley are encouraged to apply.

The council is an appointed body of six youth modeled after the Fernley City Council.

It is a youth advisory group to the city council and Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services.

Applications may be obtained from the Office of the City Manager at Fernley City Hall, 595 Silver Lace Blvd.

Mark Twain subject of performance

Did Mark Twain really have a mole on his chest he called Mr. Cantankerous? Was mining for silver in the Comstock Lode the only reason he came to Nevada? Did he change his name from Samuel Clemens to Mark Twain while writing for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City?

Learn the answers to these questions and more 7 p.m. tonight in a free Mark Twain chautauqua performance at Western Nevada Community College's Virgil Getto Hall.

McAvoy Lane will portray the late humorist, lecturer, novelist, satirist and writer.

Virginia City

Civic Light Opera does 'Jekyll and Hyde'

The Nevada Civic Light Opera will present "Jekyll and Hyde" at Piper's Opera House with weekend shows through Oct. 22.

The opening night with champagne gala is sold out, as is Sunday's performance.

Preferred seats (rows 1-10) are all that is left for all shows: 7:30 p.m Saturday and Sunday, and 2 p.m Sunday. Tickets are $25.

Kids' Goblin Parade planned for Halloween night

The second annual Goblin Parade will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Virginia City Jerky Co., 204 S. C Street on Halloween night, Oct. 31. Registration and lineup will begin at 4 p.m.

Cash prizes will be given for costumes for both children and adults. Categories are Best Overall Costume, Scariest Costume and Most Original Costume.

There will also be a prize for the Best Float or Vehicle.
