Fun Walk/Run to Como Peak helps youth programs

A 5K-, 10K-, 2-mile walk and 1-mile fun run will begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 14 off Old Dayton Valley Road with the route heading toward Como Peak.

Entry fee is $25 per person or $40 for youth and adults walking or running the course together; $8 for the 1-mile fun run. Fees are due today. Late entries are $30 per person. Entry fee includes T-shirt, raffle and refreshments.

Proceeds benefit Central Lyon County Youth Programs. Call 246-0320.

Mound House

Blood drive and Mammovan at Bread of Life Church

Bread of Life Christian Fellowship is sponsoring a blood drive and a visit by the Nevada Health Centers Mammovan today in Mound House. A nurse will give free blood pressure checks and health-related information.

The church and the Mound House Business and Community Association have scheduled this event to help build community awareness and participation.

Mammovan appointments are from 7:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Call (877) 581-6266. A bloodmobile will be available from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Call 230-3546, or go to www.bloodhero.com and use sponsor code "Mound House."

Silver Springs

Farm to feature organic farm Fun Day with three growers

Custom Gardens Organic Farm in Silver Springs will be hosting two other Lyon County Certified Organic Producers for a Farmers Fun Day Harvest from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 15.

The three farms represented are Churchill Butte Horticulture of Stagecoach, Home Grown Nevada of Wellington and the host farm, Custom Gardens, 3701 Elm St. in Silver Springs.

A variety of produce, vegetables and fruit from these local farms will be available for fresh-food shoppers. Seniors may redeem Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons for produce. Call 577-2069.

Wild-horse workshop for gentling for adoption Oct. 18-22

Least Resistance Training Concepts' wild-horse workshop is Oct. 18-22.

The group will be gentling horses that will be available for adoption. The adoption auction is noon Oct. 21.

Virginia City

Outhouses get ready to run down VC's C Street in annual race

The 2006 Championship Outhouse Races will be Oct. 7 and 8 down C Street in Virginia City.

The Outhouse Parade will kick off the weekend's events at noon Oct. 7. All racers and their outhouses will march down C Street, with the Famous Plungerettes leading the parade, tossing plungers and dancing. There will be double-elimination heats on Oct. 7, with the finals Oct. 8. Races throughout the day are on C Street, starting at the Bucket of Blood and racing to the end of the Delta Saloon Parking Lot.

The "pit" area for all outhouses and their teams will be in the Bucket of Blood Parking lot. This year, there will be plenty of vendors for food and souvenirs.

New outhouse teams are sought for this event. Entry fee is: $100/per outhouse.

Nevada Civic Light Opera does 'Jekyll & Hyde' at Piper's

The Nevada Civic Light Opera will present "Jekyll and Hyde" at Piper's Opera House with nine shows each weekend Oct. 6-22.

The opening night with champagne gala is sold out, as is the Oct. 8 performance. Preferred seats (rows 1-10) are all that is left for all shows: Oct. 7, 14, and 21 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 8, 15, and 22 at 2 p.m. Those tickets are $25 each.

Veterans Day Parade seeks parade entries for Nov. 11

Entries are being accepted for the Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11 in Virginia City.

To enter, mail a description of your entry to Lorraine Du Fresne at P.O. Box 3, Virginia City, NV 89440.

The parade forms at 10 a.m. at the Fourth Ward School, and begins at 11 a.m.

A dinner for parade participants will follow the parade at the Storey County Senior Center, at the corner of Mill and E streets.
