Republican Women to meet at Nugget

The Carson City Republican Women will be holding its monthly luncheon meeting at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Carson City Nugget. Cost is $17 per person. Guest speaker will be Steve Martin, state controller. Call 882-7960.

Telecom Pioneers to meet Tuesday

The Telecom Pioneers will be holding its dinner meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Beijing Palace, behind Albertsons at Clearview Drive. The Pioneers are a nonprofit group which supports community programs. All interested current and past Telecom persons and guests are invited to attend. Cost of dinner is $16 per person and includes eight entrees and two soups plus appetizers. Call 882-5205.

Celebrate Teen Read Week at the Carson City Library

The Carson City Library, along with thousands of other libraries, schools and bookstores across the country, will be celebrating the ninth annual Teen Read Week Oct. 15-21. Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association.

The library will host a reception after school from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday. There will also be an open poetry mic on Thursday.

City seeks new panel members

Carson City seeks residents to volunteer for terms on two citizens panels. City supervisors decide from among the applicants which ones ultimately will be appointed.

• The Regional Transportation Commission makes policy on transportation issues within the city, and its members establish priorities and recommend appropriate funding for improvement projects.

RTC members also serve on the Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and serve at least 10 hours a month. The open term ends December 2008.

• The Parks and Recreation Commission advises the Board of Supervisors on the use and protection of these public facilities.

A minimum commitment of 10 hours a month is expected, and all applicants must be registered voters.

The term expires in January 2010.

Douglas County

Teen Institute develops leadership skills, conservation

The 4-H Program in Douglas County is pioneering a program aimed at teens who want to develop their leadership skills and become involved in environmental conservation and stewardship projects. The 4-H Teen Institute will meet for the first time from 2:30-4:30 p.m. today at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office at 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. All area teens are invited to attend the first meeting. Call 782-9960.

Countywide public debate in Douglas County Wednesday

The Business Council of Douglas County will be holding a countywide public debate at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the CVIC Hall on Esmeralda Avenue in Minden. Call 782-6715.
