Citizens' Academy offered in Storey

The Storey County Sheriff's Office is offering an 11-week Citizens' Academy beginning Nov. 15.

The Academy is designed to increase understanding between residents and the Sheriff's Office. The intent is to acquaint residents with the different roles performed by the detention officers, deputies, civilian staff and emergency dispatch communications.

The goal of the Citizens Academy is to provide residents' knowledge of the criminal justice system and the responsibilities of the Storey County Sheriff's Office.

Participation in the Citizens' Academy requires a commitment of one night a week for 11 weeks. The classes will be Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Virginia Highlands Meeting Center.

During the academy, participants will tour the detention facility and observe the booking process.

Classes will include activities such as a ride-along with patrol deputies, domestic-violence awareness and understanding the roles of the district attorney and justice court.

The academy classes will be instructed by deputies, detention staff and civilian court personnel, who have years of training and experience in the operation of the Sheriff's Office.

Applicants will be evaluated and notified when they are selected to participate. Applications will be maintained for future academy participation.
