The Carson City Sheriff's Department is hosting a Citizens Academy, beginning Sept. 27

The six-week academy will conclude on Nov. 1 with a graduation and awards banquet.

Classes will be held on 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Carson City Jail. A few classes will be at off-site locations.

The academy offers the opportunity to experience various types of training that sheriff's deputies receive and to observe the array of situations which officers encounter daily.

Participants learn about patrol operations, arrest procedures, defensive tactics, drug and graffiti units, and the role community policing plays.

The academy is open to everyone 18 years of age or older who can meet the eligibility criteria.

Preference will be given to Carson City residents, merchants and local businesses and their employees.

There is no charge; however, due to a limited number of openings, not all applicants will be able to attend.

The deadline for completed applications is 5 p.m. Sept. 20.

For further information or to request an application, contact the Carson City Sheriff's Department at 887-2500 or Chief Beverly Moltz at 887-2020, ext. 1904.
