The Nevada Arts Council, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Education and the Nevada Alliance for Arts Education, is currently accepting registration from schools wishing to participate in the second year of Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation contest for high school students. Ten of Nevada's 17 school districts participated last year. Teachers are provided with free multimedia curriculum materials. For information, visit www.poetryoutloud.org.


Carson City


Guinns plan Nevada Day, Halloween events


Gov. Kenny Guinn, First Lady Dema Guinn, and State Treasurer Brian Krolicki will host the annual Chili Feed from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the upstairs area of the Carson Nugget. As the Governor and First Lady are moving their belongings from the Governor's Mansion, they will not be able to open the mansion for public tours following the Nevada Day Parade. Trick-or-treaters are invited to the mansion at 5 p.m. Tuesday.


BAC hosts Mad Hatter Ball Saturday


There will be a Mad Hatter Ball from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom at 449 W. King St. Patrons are invited to bring a potluck snack or dessert. There will be a hat contest. Cost is $12 at the door or $10 in advance. Children are $6.Call 883-9351.


Elks Lodge to serve pasties for Nevada Day


The Carson City Elk's Lodge #2177 will be serving Cornish pasties for $3.50 each after the Nevada Day Parade at noon. Pasties are a pastry filled with meat, potatoes and vegetables. The lodge is located at 515 N. Nevada St. Call 882-2177.

Clerk offers online sample ballots


Storey County Clerk/Treasurer Doreen Bacus has announced that her office has made sample ballots for all Storey County voting precincts available on the Storey County Web site. Anyone unsure of their voting precinct should call 847-0969.

Virginia City


Governor's Ball at Piper's Opera House


The Governor's Ball will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Piper's Opera House in Virginia City. Tickets are $37,50 with $5 off to each couple for three or more couples. 1800's period attire, formal western or formal attire is highly recommended. All proceeds go to support Piper's Opera House.
