The Reno High boys tennis team just had too much strength in singles for Carson in the showdown for the Sierra League lead in boys tennis.

Reno won eight-of-nine singles matches on its way to a 12-6 win on Thursday in Reno. "We just couldn't pull it off in the singles," Carson coach Pat Houlihan said.

Carson and Reno was tied after the first round 3-3 as the Senators swept all three doubles matches and the Huskies swept all three singles contests. Bryt Lewis and Brad Cobler, Chris Wear and Nick Smallman and James Pelz and Gordon Lee all won 6-3 for Carson.

Spencer Brinson won Carson's only singles match 7-5 in the second round and Lewis and Cobler also won 6-4. A key match came when Reno's No. 1 doubles team was able to hold off Wear and Smallman for a 6-4 win, allowing the Huskies to take a 7-5 lead into the final round instead of the match being tied 6-6. Smallman and Wear had Carson's only win in the third round, winning 6-1.

"The kids played their hearts out," Houlihan said. "The kids played hard to the end. Reno's just a better team."

RENO 15, CHS GIRLS 3

Reno showed why its the Sierra League frontrunner against Carson (6-2, 5-2). The Senators received impressive efforts in wins by Christa Casci (6-3) and Tiffany Moore (6-3) in singles and Michelle Mauer and Sarah Asp won 6-4 in doubles.

Elise Hansen also had an outstanding effort in a 6-7 (3-7) loss in singles. "She played a great match," Carson coach Diane Baker Roberts said.

Casci also sustained a close 5-7 loss. Meagan Carter and Alyssa Corda played well in two 3-6 losses as did Jenni Hood and Kristi Philippi in a 3-6 loss. Corda also teamed with Briana Collings to play well in a 3-6 loss.

While Reno had their share of 6-0 and 6-1 wins, Roberts said she couldn't fault her team's play.

"I don't think the Os and 1s showed how really close some of the matches were," Roberts said. "They're tougher than I thought. The girls played well. I thought they did their best."
