WNC baseball offers event for seniors

All senior high school baseball players are invited to attend the Western Nevada College Wildcats baseball team tryouts/clinic at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 at John L. Harvey Field.

Western Nevada will provide the bats while participants will have to provide all the other equipment they'll need. Cost for the event is $10.

Wildcat soccer falls in scrimmage

Western Nevada women's soccer coach Hillary Arthur was pleased with her team's play in a 3-0 loss to American River Community College in a scrimmage on Saturday in Sacramento.

The Wildcats trailed 1-0 at halftime before their inexperience began to show in the second half, Arthur said.

"I was excited to see pretty much a brand new team connect and play well together," said Arthur about the first half."

"We kind of got a little bit frazzled," Arthur said about the second half. "It will take a game or two for us to come together. I felt confident with waht we showed in the first half."

Western Nevada will open its season at 11 a.m. Friday against Butte Community College at Shasta Community College in Redding, Calif.

Marjanovic takes over for Patraw

Fourth-year assistant coach Antoinette Marjanovic has been named the interim head coach of the University of Nevada women's soccer program effective immediately it was announced on Tuesday.

Marjanovic replaces fourth-year head coach Terri Patraw who is leaving the program after three seasons.

"Marjanovic is a rising star in the coaching profession, and our student-athletes have benefitted and will continue to benefit from her success and experience as a coach and a standout player," Nevada athletic director Cary Groth said. "We appreciate everything that Terri Patraw has done for the Wolf Pack soccer program and wish her the best of luck in the future."

Nevada opens the 2007 regular season this weekend at Mackay Stadium, playing host to Oregon at 7 p.m. on Friday and Portland State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Gamer Baseball offering clinics

Gamers Baseball is providing a series of clinics this fall.

Every Sunday from September 30 through October 28, pitching, catching and hitting clinics will be held. Pitching clinics will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., catchers clinics will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and hitting clinics will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The clinics will be held at the WB Baseball and Softball Training Center, 3865 Mira Loma Drive, Suite 104, Reno.

The clinics are for ages 8-13 and the cost for each series is $300.

There will also be an fall baseball all-around skills clinic covering every aspect of the game for ages 8-13 at Reno's South Valley Sports Complex. Cost is $75 per player and $65 for each additional sibling.

Soccer officials are desperately needed

The Northern Nevada Officials Association is in desperate need for officials to work high school games this season.

There's such a shortage of soccer officials that Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association assistant director Donnie Nelson worked Tuesday's varsity girls game between McQueen and Hug. Nelson is also expected to work games at Carson and Douglas.

Youth volleyball signups being held

Registration for the Carson City Recreation Department's youth volleyball league will continue through September 7.

Registration is beind held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Carson City Community Center office.

The league is open to boys and girls in fifth through eighth grades. Cost is $50 for one child and $90 for two children in the same family.

Instruction and games will begin on September 11. The program will operation twice a week from 6 to 8 p.m.
