Lyon Utilities hoping for grants for sewer service in Mound House

Mound House may get sewer service if Lyon County can come up with the funding.

Lyon Utilities Director Mike Workman said the county is evaluating funding sources such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Communities program or the Army Corps of Engineers.

The county hopes to obtain grant funds to provide sewer service to Mound House that would include main trunk lines to serve both the industrial and the residential areas.

The issue will be discussed at the Lyon County Commission meeting on Thursday.

"We want to get support from our board for moving forward on this," Workman said. "This is a very first step."

He said there are so many septic tanks in Mound House that there is a risk heavy metals can impact the groundwater and eventually the Carson River.

"Wastewater treatment has always been an issue," Workman said. "But with the Vidler water project coming through, that will give us the capability of fire flows, so it makes sense that sewer is right on the heels of that."

The county has approved an agreement with Vidler Water Purveyors to pipe water between Carson City and Dayton.

Workman said he was working with Diamondback Properties, which owns a great deal of property in the area, and with planning groups to assess the viability of a sewer line.

The line would take Mound House sewage to Dayton's Rolling A Wastewater Treatment Plant through a series of collection systems. It would require additional infrastructure such as a lift station, Workman said.

He said providing service to Mound House would represent a significant amount of improvements costing tens of millions of dollars.

"We just want to find out and take a look at the funding sources," he said.
