A gift of 158 turkeys was made from an anonymous donor to Community Chest Inc. in Storey County, and many free turkeys are still available.

Community Chest thrift store manager Pam Trabert said they didn't publicize the turkeys because they didn't know until late Friday that they would get them.

Residents can get turkeys by calling Trabert's cell phone at 720-271-6479.

She said people don't have to be residents of Storey County to get a turkey.

"It doesn't make any difference," she said.

Community Chest volunteers were assisted by Jeep Posse members in handing out the turkeys, which are being stored at the Ice House in Virginia City.

The Community Chest also had more than 30 food baskets available.

Tami Nail, a volunteer with Community Chest, said there are still a lot of turkeys left unclaimed.

"We have them every year," she said. "But we didn't have storage this year."

She said they had quite a few additional donations of turkeys this year.

"We also got baskets and barrels of food from all over the county," Nail said.

There is a sign on C Street near the Community Chest office at Toll Road and C Street on Virginia City's Divide pointing the way to the turkeys, she said.
