AAA offers free rides, tows

AAA offers Tipsy Tow to those in need of a ride home on New Year's Eve. AAA will offer the service to drinking drivers from 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 6 a.m. on New Year's Day. Drivers, potential passengers, party hosts, bartenders and restaurant managers can call 1-800-222-4357 for a free tow home of up to five miles. Tell the AAA operator, "I need a Tipsy Tow."

The service will provide a one-way ride for the driver and vehicle to the driver's home. If there are additional passengers who need a ride, they will be taken to the driver's home as long as there is sufficient room for them to be transported safely in the tow truck. AAA membership is not required for Tipsy Tow.

Openings still available for ski, snowboard program

The Carson City Recreation Division still has a limited number of openings for its Junior Ski and Snowboard program. Registrations will be held 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Recreation Office in the Carson City Community Center through Jan. 11 or until program is full.

This program is available to all children ages 9 (or in the fourth grade) to 18 years old. The program begins Jan. 27, weather permitting, and offers the following: ski or snowboard instruction (all ability levels); six Sundays of fun on the slopes; transportation to and from the Community Center and Diamond Peak; Special "reduced-rate" Family ski days.

Library hosting training sessions

Carson City Library's Computer Tutor will provide free one hour computer training sessions, 12-2 p.m., on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These one-on-one sessions will cover the World Wide Web or Microsoft Word (word processing), per the student's request. Sign-ups are required.

The Computer Tutor teaches two skills: how to find information (surf) on the Web or how to word process using Microsoft Word. Students must know how to use a computer keyboard and mouse. Students may sign up for a total of three, one hour sessions.

The Computer Tutor does not trouble-shoot problems students may be having with their home computers. The Computer Tutor only teaches at the Carson City Library. To reserve an hour with Computer Tutor, call 887-2244.

Healthcare meeting Jan. 8

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary will hold its January meeting and luncheon on Jan. 8 at the Casino Fandango, 3800 South Carson St. "Meet and greet" will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch, business meeting and program to follow.

Tickets on sale for Soroptimist fundraiser

Soroptimist International of Carson Valley will present its annual Savor the Flavor fundraiser 6-9 p.m. March 8 at Genoa Lakes Golf Resort. The evening will feature wines and microbrews donated by some of the area's finest wineries and distributors, a food tasting from local restaurants, and a silent auction. Raffle tickets will be sold.

Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Reno

Batmobile on display in Reno Museum

Made famous in comics, on TV and in movies, the unique Batmobile will be on display at the National Automobile Museum in Reno through June 2008.

Kids ages 18 and younger can see the amazing Batmobile for free on Batmobile Saturdays through the end of March when they are accompanied by a paying adult.

The Batmobile is on loan to the National Automobile Museum through June 2008, courtesy of the Joe Kaminkow family of Reno.

The museum is open daily to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $4 for children 6 to 18 years. Children age 5 and younger are free.

Meeting scheduled for Young Chautauquans

An information meeting for Young Chautauquans will be 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Carson Valley Museum in Gardnerville.

Students from grades 4 through 12 are accepted from private, public and home schooling programs.

Painters group to meet Jan. 9 in Minden

The Carson Valley Desert Brushes will meet at 6 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Johnson Lane Firehouse, 1450 Stephanie Way in Minden.

Firefighting job fair Jan. 8 in Elko

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) will host a Job Fair at the BLM Elko District Office, 3900 East Idaho Street, in Elko on Jan. 3 from 6-8 p.m.

Applications for summer seasonal firefighting and dispatching positions for the 2008 fire season must be submitted online. BLM, BIA, and Forest Service fire staff will be on hand to help people apply and computers will be available as well.
