Clients wanted for RSVP program

As our seniors enter their 60s, 70s, 80s and older, often their relatives and friends move away or die.

The elderly encounter feelings they haven't experienced before, feelings of loneliness and of being unimportant. They effectively remain in their homes, are able to pay their utility bills and purchase food. But, they don't have the friendships they used to have. They often are no longer able to join in community recreation programs or they have lost the spirit to reach out to others.

If this describes anyone you know, call the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP at 687-4680, ext. 0 and ask for Janet. RSVP is committed to helping seniors retain their "quality of life" through connections with their community.

Summer Reading Program to conclude with party

Carson City Library's youth department will host a wrap-up party to cap off the Summer Reading Program, which begins at noon on Saturday.

Teens and youth who participated in "Get a Clue" are invited to the party. Raffle drawing prizes will be awarded, along with certificates and food.

Friends of the Carson City Library sponsor the Summer Reading Program. Carson City Library is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m.- 9 p.m., and Friday, Saturday, and Monday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and is located at the corner of Roop and Washington streets.

Donations for shopping spree sought

The Sierra Nevada Women's Active 20-30 Club is seeking donations for its annual children's shopping spree scheduled for Aug. 18, at Wal-Mart on Topsy Lane. The event is sponsored by the women's club with assistance from the men's Carson Valley No. 85 Club and the Family Support Council.

The goal is to purchase clothing for 50 local children in grades kindergarten through eighth who otherwise would not get to go back-to-school shopping.. At the end of the shopping spree, participating children will receive a free breakfast at McDonalds.

Poker game to benefit Relay for Life

A No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament fundraiser for Relay for Life will be held Friday at Sharkey's Casino in Gardnerville. Sign-in is at 6:30 p.m. The tournament starts at 7 p.m. There is a $40 buy-in and $20 re-buys in the first hour. Library helps students 'Get a Clue'

"Get a Clue" is the theme for the Summer Reading Program for children at the Douglas County Public Library. Come to the Zephyr Cove library at 1:30 p.m. on Friday for a mystery scavenger hunt.

Day-long program for builders offered

A "Houses That Work" training program will be held Today from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at Harrah's in Reno.

"Houses" is a national building industry training program developed by the Energy & Environmental Building Association (EEBA) and is based on building research from the U.S. Department of Energy's Building America Program. "Houses That Work" provides the building professional with the techniques and product application technology to assure better building performance, durability, affordability and comfort.

Taught by national building science expert and EEBA Certified Trainer, Justin Wilson, the day-long course is designed for builders, general and mechanical contractors, architects, engineers, building inspectors and code officials, as well as students of building science and construction. The course concludes with proven examples of marketing a home built to these standards and recommendations on how to incorporate these changes into one's business for immediate results.
