CAHI to host celebration

Citizens for Affordable Homes, Inc. (CAHI) will celebrate the completion of eight homes in Dayton at 10 a.m. June 23 at 100 Pine Cone Road.

Eleven families will be in the building process the first part of July.

The event will provide food and photo opportunities with two very important persons, according to a press release. Call 883-7101.

Rock Point Mill tour set for June 2

Local historian Stony Tennant will give tours of the Rock Point Mill 9-11 a.m. June 2.

Tour-goers will meet at the Dayton State Park group area for this easy walk to the mill site. Some uphill walking is involved.

Basketry class at state park

"Tule Baskets and Cattail Ducks," a basketry class, will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. June 6 at Dayton State Park in the group pavilion.

Deborah Stevenson, curator of education for the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs, will provide hands-on instruction and materials.

Participants must be 13 years or older to make a basket. Children under 13 accompanied by an adult can make the cattail duck. Program is limited to 15 participants. To reserve your space please call 687-5678.

NNDA Golf-A-Thon planned for June 15

Golfers can win a slot machine or wine-tasting party for four at the Northern Nevada Development Association's second annual Golf-A-Thon June 15 at Dayton Valley Golf Course.

Those hitting a hole in one can win $50,000 or a new car.

Participants can play 100 holes of golf in one day and proficiency is not required.

To play, participants must raise $500 or more in pledges.

Listening library planned

The Cultural and Performing Arts for Dayton Area and the Lyon County library system are beginning a pilot program to create a listening library and a book drive. The listening library will be made up of CDs and DVDs that feature classical music, both instrumental and vocal, operas, jazz, big band and musical theater.

DHS class of '97 to meet for reunion

Dayton High School class of 1997 will hold a 10-year reunion July 28.

The day includes an afternoon of fun and a picnic and barbecue 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Zephyr Cove Resort. Cost is $10 for the family; bring your own refreshments.

A dinner-dance cruise on the MS Dixie II will be later in the day and is for adults only. Cost is $69. Reservations can be made by calling (775) 589-4908.

Coupon available for free dumping

Residents of the Storey County side of Mark Twain can get coupons to dump debris, excluding household garbage and hazardous materials, during the month of June at the Dayton Transfer Station.

The station is open Monday-Wednesday and Saturday-Sunday.

To get a coupon mailed, residents should call 775-847-0958 or stop by 100 Toll Road in Virginia City to pick up a coupon.

Antique Mall to hold flea markets

The owners of the Antique Mall at 10104 Highway 50 are looking for vendors for their new flea market. The charge is $10 per day, and set-up will begin at 6 a.m.

Virginia City

Vietnam vet to lead 'Heroes' parade

Virginia City will celebrate Memorial Day with a Celebration of Heroes Parade down C Street beginning at noon on May 26.

There will also be special salute to Vietnam veterans, with grand marshal Bill Avansino of Virginia City leading the way. Bill was a Marine Corps. radioman in Vietnam for two tours of duty, including during the Tet Offensive. He was in the battle of Hue and also served in battles at Khe Sanh and Dong Ha. He will be riding in a red Mustang convertible driven by Bill Person of Virginia City, also a Navy veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.

The Celebration of Heroes Parade is held on Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend to avoid interfering with ceremonies vets hold at area cemeteries. It is held to honor the sacrifices of veterans, particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Veterans groups, clowns, horse groups, musical groups, theater groups, antique cars are expected.

High school students present art show

The Comstock History Center in Virginia City will host an art exhibit by the students of Virginia City High School on the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

The exhibit is open through the month of June, Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Comstock History Center, 20 N. E Street, on the corner of Union and E Streets, in Virginia City.

The art show has an anti-drug and alcohol abuse theme.

Ballet Nevada offers 'Wizard of Oz'

Ballet Nevada will present a storybook ballet, "The Wizard of Oz," May 27 at Piper's Opera House, Virginia City.

Gerald Pierce, an original Munchkin and soldier in the 1939 Wizard of Oz film, will narrate the impressive ballet.

The ballet stars local professional Marty Lewis and a cast of more than 35 local dancers.

The performance is at 2 p.m. Advance ticket sales are $15 for adults and $7 for children. Tickets at the door are $20 for adults and $12 for children. danceSpirit plans wine-tasting event

The danceSpirit Performing Arts and Piper's Opera House announce an evening of wine tasting and entertainment at 6 p.m. June 2.

Several wineries and distributors from the area will present a variety of wines created in the Northern Nevada area. Entertainment will be provided by the Stars Performance Dance Company from danceSpirit in Carson City. Master of Ceremonies will be John Tyson.

Profits from the event will aid danceSpirit Performing Arts in funding its yearly Christmas Show: "Ebenezer Scrooge - JAZZ'D UP LIKE THE DICKENS!" and will support the efforts of Piper's Opera House to maintain and operate this historic landmark.
