Brinson and Henningsen advance in tennis

Carson High's Spencer Brinson and Ben Henningsen both moved onto the round of 16 in singles with first round wins on Thursday at Centennial Park in the Northern 4A Tennis Championships.

Brinson won 6-0, 6-2 while Henningsen won 6-3, 7-5. Henningsen won the last four games to take the second set after trailing 3-5. He also saved a set point in holding serve to force a 5-5 tie.

Henningsen receives a tough draw today as he'll face the High Desert League's No. 1 seed from Manogue. Brinson, the Sierra League's No. 3 seed, will face the High Desert League's No. 6 seed from McQueen.

Also today, the doubles competition will begin. Carson will have the Sierra League's No. 1 seed in Jordan Rogers and Brad Cobler, who are unbeaten this season. James Pelz and Spencer Trapp will also compete for Carson.

For the girls, Carson will have the Sierra League's No. 5 seeded team in Hannah Dudley and Elise Hansen and the league's No. 6 seeded team in Alyssa Corda and Hannah Shaw in action today.

All six of Galena's boys and girls singles players advanced on Thursday. For the boys, Galena's Chris Knuttson, the High Desert League's No. 3 seed, won 6-1, 6-0, Kyle Harris won 6-2, 6-3 and Shane Leeder, the High Desert's No. 7 seed, won 6-1, 6-1.

For Galena's girls, Hannah Llop, the High Desert's No. 1 seed, won 6-0, 6-0, Mica Olson, the High Desert's No. 3 seed, won 6-1, 6-3 and Hailey Lop, the High Desert's No. 2 seed, won 6-0, 6-1.

Douglas High had two girls advance on Thursday. Amelia Ritger, the Sierra League's No. 1 seed, won 6-0, 6-1 and Samantha Barnes, the Sierra League's No. 7 seed, won 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). For Carson, Tiffany Moore played well in a 5-7, 1-6 loss.

The girls singles and doubles are being held at Carson High and action continues at 8 a.m. today. The boys singles and doubles are being held at Centennial Park and action continues at 9 a.m. today. All of the semifinals and finals will be held on Saturday at CHS, beginning at 9 a.m.
