CHS Boys strong in zone tennis

The Carson High boys tennis team will be well represented today in the quarterfinals at the Northern 4A singles and doubles championships.

Spencer Brinson in singles and Jordan Rogers and Brad Cobler and James Pelz and Spencer Trapp in doubles all advanced to the quarterfinals. In girls tennis, Carson also has Elise Hansen and Hannah Dudley, who were also playing for a spot in the quarterfinals when play was suspended on Friday due to the rain.

For Carson's boys, Brinson 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Brinson will play the High Desert League's No. 2 seed from Incline in the quarterfinals.

"He has a great shot," said Carson coach Pat Houlihan about Brinson making the semifinals. "The guy from Incline is a strong hitter.

"It's going to be a wonderful match to watch. He (Brinson) has the capabilities to get into the semis."

Also for Carson, Ben Henningsen was beaten by the High Desert League's No. 1 seed from Manogue. Others in the quarterfinals included Galena's Chris Knutsson, who will play Reno High's Jeff Mullin and South Tahoe's Jimmy Roberts.

Rogers and Cobler cruised into the quarterfinals as they won 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-0. They will play Galena's Joey Prescott and John Baldwin. Rogers and Cobler, the Sierra League's No. 1 seed, stayed unbeaten on the season.

Pelz and Trapp also cruised into the quarterfinals, winning 6-3, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1. Pelz and Trapp will be tested in the quarterfinals as they will face Douglas High's top two players in Keagan Chipp and Robert Shawhan. "They're very good players," said Houlian about Chipp and Shawhan.

"They're going to have to pick it up a notch," Houlihan also said about Pelz and Trapp. "They stepped it up. They play good doubles."

Also in the quarterfinals are Galena's Collin Davis and Gavin Deller.

For the girls, Hansen and Dudley won 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in the first round. In their suspended match for the right to be in the quarterfinals, they split sets 5-7, 7-5 and are up 2-1 in the third set. Also for Carson, Alyssa Corda and Hannah Shaw won their first match 7-6 (7-3) before losing 6-3, 1-6, 3-6.

Also in doubles, Galena's Lindy Deller and Adrain Potter and Annie Roach and Kelsey Rummler have advanced to the quarterfinals. Galena's Emily McLintock and Leann Roggensack are playing for the right to be in the quarterfinals. They won 6-1 and were down 3-4 in the second set when their match was suspended.

In singles, Douglas High's Amelia Ritger, the Sierra League's No. 1 seed, had advanced to the quarterfinals where she was up 5-1 in the first set when play was suspended. Galena's Hannah Llop also advanced to the quarterfinals where she was up 6-0, 1-0 when play was suspended. Galena's Hailey Llop advanced to the quarterfinals as well.

All of the boys quarterfinals will be played at Centennial Park at 8 a.m. today. All of the girls suspended matches will be played at 8 a.m. at Carson High.

All of the boys and girls semifinals and finals will be played at CHS. The semifinals will be held at 10:30 a.m. and the championship matches will be held at 2 p.m. The top three in singles and doubles will advance to the NIAA State Championships.
