CHS boys tennis falls just short against Manogue

The Carson High boys tennis team should be extremely tired of the score 10-8 right about now.

For the third time this season, the Senators lost 10-8 and this time their season came to an end as they lost at Manogue on Tuesday in the first round of the Northern 4A playoffs. Carson also suffered 10-8 losses to Reno High and South Tahoe this season.

The difference of the match came in two 5-7 losses in the second round for Carson. The two teams headed into the second round tied 3-3, but Manogue won five of the six matches in round two on the strength of the 7-5 wins to take an 8-4 lead going into the final round. Carson won four of the last six matches, but it wasn't enough.

Spencer Brinson lost 5-7 to Manogue's No. 1 player and Jon Kane and Ricky Nyguen lost 5-7 to Manogue's No. 1 doubles team.

"He played very well," said Carson coach Pat Houlihan about Brinson. "He just came up short. He probably played the best I've seen him play in a long time."

A highlight came for Carson when Brad Cobler and Jordan Rogers swept their matches 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 to finish the season unbeaten. Cobler and Rogers should be seeded high for the upcoming zone doubles championships.

Brinson also won his other matches 6-4, 6-0. Another highlight came when Jordan Miller and Spencer Trapp beat Manogue's No. 1 team 6-3. Trapp also teamed with Alex Wing for a 6-1 win.

"The kids played their hearts out," Houlihan said. "I can't take anything away from Manogue."

GALENA 16, CHS GIRLS 2

Galena's Hailey Llop, Hannah Llop and Mica Olson all won their two matches in the first two rounds as the Grizzlies rolled to the win in the first round of the playoffs. Hailey Llop won 6-1, 6-0, Hannah Llop won 6-1, 6-0 and Olson won 6-0, 6-0. Rachel Harper also won 6-1 and Olivia Mason beat Carson's Tiffany Moore 6-4 for Galena.

For Carson, Carrie Linn won 6-3 and Jena Greenburg and Joanna Xie won 6-2 while Hannah Shaw and Alyssa Corda played well in a 4-6 loss.
