Wildcat soccer beats Great Falls

The Western Nevada College women's soccer team picked up an impressive 2-1 win over the University of Great Falls, a NAIA four-year school, on Saturday in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Jordan Forman scored both goals on assists from Alexia Balmaseda to provide the margin of victory for the Wildcats. While Ashley Winter was still unable to play for Western Nevada (8-4-2), Marina Tharin returned to action after not being able to play in Friday's 0-0 tie against North Idaho College.

"She definitely came in and helped secure the win," said Wildcat coach Hillary Arthur about Tharin.

Douglas boys soccer falls toReno

The Douglas boys soccer team suffered a setback in the Sierra League race in a 1-0 loss at Reno High on Saturday.

Douglas must now beat Carson High at home on Monday to keep its hopes of winning the Sierra League title alive. The two teams play at 7 p.m.

Carson is 7-0-3 while Douglas is now 7-3. The Tigers are also in a battle with South Tahoe for second and Douglas must still host the Vikings as well. If the Vikings won as expected on Saturday, they would be 6-2-2.

Reno and Wooster are battling for the league's fourth and final spot into the Northern 4A playoffs. Wooster is 4-3-3 and Reno is 4-4-2. Those two teams play on Monday.

"In a nutshell basically it was a typical Reno game," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "I thought we held our own. I can't complain. It was a good game. It was a pretty tough game."

Reno scored the game's only goal on a shot from about 35 yards. "it was just an unfortunate goal," Vasquez said.

Douglas also couldn't convert a one-on-one chance with the goalie on a breakaway. "We had chances," Vasquez said.

Vasquez said the Tigers' attack was hurt when forward Edgar Arceo had to move back to play defense for Ross Gardner, who had to come out of the game with an injury. Vasquez said he hopes Gardner's injury isn't too serious.

Vasquez also said Ray Kaffer, Austin Shick, Brian Randall and Eddie Vega all played well.

Mitey Mite Blues improve to 5-1

The Carson Mitey Mite Blue Senators youth football team continued its win streak with a 31-0 win over the Sparks Cardinals on Friday. Carson improved to 5-1.

David Moniz-Lewis began the scoring in the first quarter with a 40 yard touchdown run. The Cardinals came back with a nice drive but Brandon Basa thwarted a touchdown by tackling a receiver from behind after a long pass. Gage Gunzburg scored the second touchdown for the Senators on a nice 50 yard run.

Mathias Williams ran in for a 30 yard TD to make the score 19-0 at the half. The second half belonged to the Senators as well. Jarod Butler picked off a Cardinal pass to set up the next score. Brandon Gagnon sprinted around the right side on a reverse to put the Senators up 25-0.

The rest of the game belonged to the Senator offensive line and running back Jarod Butler. Lineman Nick Tibma, Bodee Brennan, Noah Tomasco, Alec Fletcher and Sam Wilson opened holes for Butler up the middle as Carson was just trying to run out the clock. Butler, carrying would be tacklers with him, scored the final touchdown from the 6 yard line to give the Senators a 31-0 win.

"The defense really wanted a shutout tonight and got it with a solid effort by everyone," defensive coordinator Tim Knorzer said.

The Senators return home to take on the North Tahoe Rams at 8 p.m. this Friday at Governors Field.

Basketball camp set for October 20

Adrian Buoncristiani and members of the Galena High School boys basketball team will provide instruction for the 14th annual Basketball Day Camp next Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Carson City Community Center.

Hosted by Western Nevada College, the camp is available to boys and girls from third through 10th grades and will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the community center.

Fundamentals will be emphasized during the camp.

Buoncristiani is a former head coach at Gonzaga University and assistant coach at Galena.

The cost is $40 for students who preregister ($45 on the day of the camp). Sign-ups will be taken starting at 8 a.m. prior to the start of the camp.

All participants are asked to bring a basketball, sack lunch and water.

Buoncristiani, a Carson City resident, formerly served as head coach at Gonzaga University (his record was 78-82 between 1972 and '78) and more recently was an assistant at Galena High School.

Members of the Galena basketball team will also be on hand to provide instruction for the clinic. Instruction consists of games, drills and contests and participants are divided according to ability.
