Western Nevada baseball beats Modesto

Logan Parsley and Jerome Pena each had three hits as the Western Nevada College baseball team beat Modesto (Calif.) College 3-2 in a scrimmage on Thursday at John L. Harvey Field.

The two teams also were tied 1-1 in the second game of a doubleheader that was suspended in the fourth inning due to darkness. The two teams will complete that game, beginning at 11 a.m. today at John L. Harvey Game. Another game will be played after the completion of the first game.

Pena also had a two-run single and Lance Ray doubled to spark the Wildcats' attack. Starting pitcher Kyle Starratt retired the first six batters he faced before giving up a run in his three innings of work.

James Nygren pitched three scoreless innings and continued to impress with his velocity, touching 95 miles an hour. Wes Osmer allowed one run in one inning and Javy Perez pitched two scoreless innings.

In the suspended second game, even though Kyle Farrell allowed one run in two innings, Wildcat coach D.J. Whittemore said Farrell was "very effective." Jose Barajas retired all six batters he faced.

The Wildcats will be missing seven sophomores today, who will be playing this weekend in the Scenic West Athletic Conference all-star series in Southern Nevada. Pitchers Josh Creveling, Josh Suarez and Osmer and Parsley, Andrew Reid, Cliff Shepard and Chuck Howard will play in the series. A game will be played at 6 p.m. today and another game will be played at noon Saturday.3
