I sat next to Janice Ayres - the executive director of Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program - the other night at a fundraiser and we got to discussing Nevada Day. I told her how I liked the new designated day, and I got a tongue lashing.
If you know Janice, you know the Nevada Day celebration includes RSVP's biggest fundraiser, which she has always been passionate about. The carnival has come to town for 21 consecutive years and it has helped Janice assist our local seniors. So come down and hit some rides for adults and children and help local seniors benefit from all the fun by assisting in the services RSVP provides, including a pro-bono law program to assist seniors with legal issues, a resistance-exercise training program, transportation program and respite care services for caregivers who need a break.

This Saturday is the 143rd Nevada Day Celebration. The parade route moves down Carson street with floats, marching bands and other entertaining entries. Two that I hope to see are the Red Hat Society and Kaulana Na Pua O Huladown dancing down Carson Street. Parade runs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and begins with the flyover of F-18 Hornets, F-16 Falcon, from the Fallon Naval Air Station and C-130 Hercules from the Nevada Air Guard.

1864 Governor's Ball is a tradition of true Nevada, held in breath taking Virginia City. Get your formal attire, western wear or if you are really daring, head down to Revelations Costume, 1210 N. Carson St., and dress in period costumes from 1864. Dance the night away and help raise funds to restore Piper's Opera House.

If you haven't stopped in to see June Joplin, do so this weekend. Starting Friday night with the Wild Sage Band and Saturday with the Carson City Community Drum Circle. All drummers and dancers, from amateur to professional, are welcome to participate. Professional certified fire dancers will perform outside in the courtyard. If you haven't seem them, you are missing out because they are quite amazing. The Community Drum Circle is free, but go in and try a warm cappuccino or latte from Comma Coffee and enjoy the beat.
