Carson City

Events celebrate Nevada's history

The Nevada Women's History Project and the Nevada State Library and Archives will hold a book signing noon-3 p.m. Saturday, at the Nevada State Library and Archives, 100 N. Stewart St.

Several authors will be available to autograph their books. The authors are Sally Zanjani, Stanley Paher, Mary Ancho Davis, Cherry Jones, Chuck Convis, Mary Lee Fulkerson, Jim Hulse, Jane Lehrman, Holly Walton-Buchanan, and Vicky Ford, as well as former U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Vucanovich, former Lt. Gov. Sue Wagner, and former State Treasurer Patty Cafferata. Also available will be books by Dixie Westergard, a longtime member of the NWHP and a member of their Hall of Fame, who died recently.

This year, as part of Nevada's birthday celebration, the Nevada State Constitution will be on display at the Joseph J. Anderson Gallery at the Library and Archives.

Nevada's Constitution has been in force for 143 years and was received in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 28, 1864. President Lincoln declared Nevada a state Oct. 31, 1864. Call Isabel Espinoza at 883-9035.

Street closures for Nevada Day Parade

Highway 395 will be closed at 8 a.m. Saturday from Winnie Lane on the north to Fairview Drive on the south. Highway 50 will be closed from Roop to Curry streets. Through traffic is encouraged to use Edmonds Drive and College Parkway to avoid the heavy parade traffic.

Board of Appeals seeks member

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving on The Board of Appeals in one of the following categories: mechanical engineer, registered architect, electrical engineer.

The applicant may need a license to do business in Carson City. This board requires a minimum commitment of up to five hours a month. All members serve without compensation.

Applications may be obtained from and returned to Carson City Executive Offices at 201 N. Carson St. No. 2 by Nov. 1.

Landscape pests topic of workshop

Learn what to do to control the most common landscape pests in northern Nevada at a free University of Nevada Cooperative Extension "Coffee With Friends" workshop, at 6:30 a.m., Nov. 7, at University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 5305 Mill St., Reno.

Douglas County

Candidates' speakers, mock caucus tonight

The Douglas County Democratic Central Committee is sponsoring a public forum from 6-8 p.m. today at the CVIC Hall on Esmeralda Street.

The Democratic presidential candidates will have surrogate speakers to offer candidate's positions.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto will be moderator. Douglas County Superintendent of Schools Carol Lark will speak about the proposed school bond issue.

Immediately following the speakers, there will be a opportunity to participate in a "mock caucus" to learn what will be happening at the precinct caucuses in January. Refreshments will be available.
