Garcia sets school record for Dayton

Erika Garcia set a school record for goals in a season as the Dayton High girls soccer team rolled to a 9-0 win over Yerington on Tuesday to conclude the regular season.

Garcia scored three goals to give her 36 on the year. Dayton (13-5, 10-2) finished second in the Northern 3A and will open in the playoffs on Thursday.

Garcia scored twice in the first six minutes, once on an assist from Natasha Olivera. After Jackie Talavera scored, Garcia scored again on an another assist from Olivera. Jazmin Castaneda then assisted on Olivera's goal, Magda Landa scored on a penalty kick, Leah Kennedy scored on an assist from Velma Arauz and Amber Brooks scored to give Dayton an 8-0 halftime lead.

Arauz scored on an assist from Haley Johnson in the first minute of the second half to finish the scoring. Stephanie Shoup made four saves and Rachel Clark made one save to post the shutout.

Pack softball wins tournament crown

The Pack 12 and under softball Team won the USSA Reno Fall Classic held this past weeked at Idlewild Park to qualify for the 2008 USSSA World Series.

The team has gone 15-3 over the last three weekends of tournament play and have advanced to the championship game in each tournament. The team finally broke through for the title this past weekend with thrilling come-from-behind wins in the semifinals and finals.

This past weekend, the team had two one-run wins over the Sunnyvale (Calif.) Wicked, a hard fought win over the Reno Wildcats and a come-from-behind win in its last at bat against the Nevada Lightning Orange.

The team includes players from Reno, Carson City, Dayton and Fallon. Rebecca Hval is from Carson and Micahela Hoff is from Dayton.

The team is coached by University of Nevada fifth year senior Amanda Wise and Denae Jones. Team director is Nevada coach Michelle Gardner. Anyone interested in sponsoring or joining the team please cam call Gardner, 813-4769.
