The Western Nevada College baseball team opened its fall schedule with two easy wins over top high school seniors from Oregon and Utah on Saturday at John L. Harvey Field.
Western Nevada opened with an 8-1 win over Oregon and then beat Utah 17-1. Against Oregon, Western Nevada took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Travis Feiner doubled and scored on Lance Ray's triple. Ray scored on a groundout to make it 3-0.
In the fifth, Cliff Shepard scored on Kyle Farrell's single to make it 3-0. In the sixth, Brian Barnett tripled and scored on Darren Bruhn's single. Shepard followed with an RBI double and scored on a passed ball to make it 6-0.
Kyle Starratt started for Western Nevada and allowed two hits over three scoreless innings. Josh Suarez didn't allow a hit and struck out two over two innings and and Joes Barajas retired all six batters he faced.
Andrew Reid had three hits, including a double, Feiner had two hits, including an RBI double, Barnett and Shepard each had two hits and Nate Whalin added an RBI single for the Wildcats. Western Nevada's Brooks Greenlee was used as Oregon's catcher and had a hit for Oregon.
Against Utah, the Wildcats pounded out 19 hits. Greenlee was 4-for-4, Jerome Pena was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, Brett Moravec went 3-for-4 with a double, Ray had two hits and a double and Chuck Howard had three hits, including two doubles.
Wes Osmer and James Nygren had impressive outings on the mound. Osmer pitched three scoreless innings while Nygren finished up, pitching two scoreless innings. Nygren was consistently hitting 91 miles an hour and reached 92. Farrell started and pitched two scoreless innings.
The Wildcats will play again today against another group of top high school seniors from Utah at 9:30 a.m. at Ron McNutt Field.
