WILDCATS BASEBALL FALLS

On Saturday, the Western Nevada College baseball team played what looked to be the Utah Baseball Academy's "B" team and won 17-1.

But on Sunday at Ron McNutt Field, Utah brought out what looked to be its "A" team and the talented bunch of top high school seniors beat the Wildcats 14-8 at Ron McNutt Field.

Wildcats starting pitcher Josh Creveling was the victim of bad luck in the third inning when a broken bat infield single with two outs gave Utah runners at first and second with two outs. After a wild pitch, Utah went on to score four runs to take a 4-0 lead on a two-run single and back-to-back doubles.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth on Logan Odom's two-run double and Brett Moravac's RBI single. But Utah added four runs in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead.

Western Nevada tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the sixth. Odom and Kyle Gutchewsky singled and Odom scored on a groundout. After Logan Parsley walked, Parsley and Gutchewsky pulled off a double steal, with Gutchewsky scoring to make it 8-5.

Davis Banks then hit a two-run double and Chuck Howard had an RBI single to make it 8-8. But Utah added three runs in the seventh and three runs in the ninth.

Howard had three hits, Odom and Gutchewsky both had two hits, including a double, Moravec and Brian Barnett each had two hits and Parsley added a single. The Wildcats will next play at 6 p.m. Friday against the Reno Astros at Moana Stadium.

WILDCATS SOCCER TRIUMPHS

The Western Nevada College Wildcats soccer team took a 3-1 victory over College of Sequoias (Calif.) Sunday to end the Victor Valley College Tournament in Victorville, Calif.

The Wildcats, now 4-1 on the season, went 2-1 and finished third in the tournament.

Alexia Balmaseda led WNC with two goals and Jordan Forman added one for the Wildcats.

"Our swiftness definitely helped us secure a win today," said WNC coach Hillary Arthur. "Our midfielders had a great game. They helped us maintain our momentum. It was a huge team effort - everybody put a good effort in."

The Wildcats return to action Friday, when they host Lassen College at Edmonds Sports Complex at 4 p.m.
