Derby to address leadership retreat

Healthy Communities Coalition is hosting a Leadership Retreat for community leaders of task forces and coalitions focusing on reducing poverty and substance abuse, as well as for community leaders of school-based youth alcohol and drug-abuse prevention teams today in Dayton.

Jill Derby, a candidate for Nevada's second congressional district, will be the featured speaker. The retreat will also include mini-workshops on grant writing, fundraising and inspiring collaborative, and creative solutions for community issues with presenters Christy McGill, Sara Ross, and Quest Lakes. 'Night of the Arts' slated at high school

Dayton High School hosts "Night of the Arts" 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

There will be exhibitions by Dayton High School art students, multicultural dances, culinary delights, and music.

Oodles of Noodles cooks sought

The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce is calling for contestants to join the seventh annual Oodles of Noodles Cookoff on May 10.

The entry fee is $50 until April 30 and $65 after that date. The one-day event combines good food and vendor and business booths.

The event will be held in Old Town Dayton on Logan Way and Pike Street. Setup on Friday afternoon is recommended.

DHS Boosters host golf tournament

Dayton High School Booster Club's 14th annual golf tournament will be April 27 at the Dayton Valley Golf Club, 101 Palmer Drive.

Local artist's work on display

Giclée prints done by Laurie Nelson of Smith Valley will be displayed at the Lyon County Dayton Gallery through May 2.

Vendors sought for Dayton Valley Days

The 20th annual Dayton Valley Days is Sept. 20-21 and will honor the buildings of yesterday with the theme "Old Places, New Faces."

The Dayton Station, the historical railroad depot will be included, along with the other buildings from the community's past.

Money raised goes to the continued restoration of historic Old Town Dayton and aiding organizations that provide Christmas gifts to those in need, prevention and intervention, scholarships and support for other needs of the community.

Council presents Western writer

The Churchill Arts Council will present a reading by the noted Western writer Teresa Jordan at 5 p.m. Saturday in the E.L. Wiegand Gallery, Oats Park Art Center.

'The Sunshine Boys' to be performed

The Gold Hill Theater Troupe will perform Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys," directed by Richard J. McGregor, at 8 p.m. Wednesdays from April 30 to June 4 at the theater, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill.

Fly-in looking for vendors

The 13th Annual Lyon County Fly-In is May 17-18 at the Lyon County Regional Airport in Silver Springs with the theme "Kids in Aviation."

Booth space is $50 for craft booths and $65 for commercial. The cost for nonprofit groups is $20.

Space is available 10-by-10-foot booths. Applications can be obtained at www.lyoncountyflyin.com or by calling 887-1294.

One of the big draws to the event is the "Young Eagles" program, which allows youths ages 8-17 years old to experience flying with an experienced pilot.

Wranglers to celebrate river

The Carson River Festival, a family-friendly event, will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 10 at Fort Churchill State Historic Park on Fort Churchill Road in Silver Springs.

Teens from local high schools are planning a variety of activities. Crafts, history programs, nature programs, hiking, birding, face painting and interactive models will be available.

Festival-goers should bring a picnic lunch to enjoy along the banks of the Carson River or at one of the many picnic areas. A concession stand will also be available to purchase food.

Lyon Democrats to meet

The monthly meeting of the Lyon County Democratic Central Committee will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Stagecoach Community Center on Highway 50.

Cindy Trigg, rural organizer for the Nevada State Democratic Party, will give an overview of what to expect for the Nevada State Democratic Convention in Reno from May 16-18.

Ham radio exams available

Regularly scheduled testing sessions for Amateur Radio Licenses are now available for the first time in Stagecoach.

Volunteer examiners will be available every other month on the second Saturday of the even-numbered months.

The next session will be 8 a.m.-noon June 14 at 8755 Cimarron Trail. Those upgrading an existing license should bring the original license and a photocopy, as well as the originals of any CSCEs.

Chili Cookoff seeking cooks

Virginia City's International Chili Cookoff, an International Chili Society regional contest, is looking for cooks.

Cooks will compete for cash prizes for red chili, green chili and salsa. There is also a people's choice competition.

Global Voice Service Day set

A music revival celebrating Global Youth Service Day will be held at Piper's Opera House in Virginia City at 6 p.m. April 26.

Community Chest, Inc. and the Global Voice Project are partnering with the Tahoe Truckee Alliance for the Musical Arts to present the revival, called "Conviction of the Heart." The concert will feature more than 20 local musicians playing songs from the 60s through the 90s. There will be a light dinner and silent auction at 6 p.m., with the music to follow at 7 p.m.
