120 years ago


The present year is the fifth year which the aggregate of figures is 25. The old prophecy reads, whenever the sum of figures is 25, some warlike kingdoms will draw the sword and peaceful nations in peace shall thrive. What manner the prediction is to be verified in 1888 (1+8+8+8=25) remains yet to be seen, but the present condition of Europe seems to promise an abundant fulfillment of the prophecy. - Philadelphia Inquirer.


100 years ago


While workmen were sawing into a block of stone in Exter, England, recently, they cut into a cavity in which was found a large cluster of live bees. There was not much sign of life in the bees at first, but when the air was admitted they gradually revived and after a few hours several of them were able to fly.


70 years ago


In defeating the Sparks Railroaders 25 to 22 last evening the Carson Indian School basketball team established itself as a strong contender for championship honors this year. Not only did the Indians topple Sparks from it's undefeated position, but they proved untrue the oft-heard contention that the Indians are beaten once you get a lead against them and can only "go places" when they're on the long end of the score.


50 years ago


Former Carson City resident Ginger Hollenbeck won many prizes and a trip to Spain when she was named "Queen for a Day" on the nationally-televised program.


20 years ago


Assemblyman John Marvel, R-Battle Mountain, has filed for a sixth two-year term. Assemblyman Marvel served Nevada from 1979-2007. He was elected to office in 1978.


10 years ago


Francis Seelinger was remembered Friday as a verdant supporter of education. "All I can say about Francis is that she was the best," remarked Kirk Kinne, longtime friend. Seelinger passed away at the age of 82 recently.
