Carson City


Canadian to speak on art at library


Nevada Neighbors, the Capital City Arts Initiative's series of presentations on contemporary art, will feature Brenda Cleniuk at 7 p.m. Wednesday in "True North: Art in Canada," a talk at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St. There will be an informal reception for Cleniuk at the library at 6:15 p.m. The talk is free.


Cleniuk is the director of Neutral Ground, a major center for experimental art in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. See www.arts-initiative.org/index.html




Daughters of Norway meeting


The Daughters of Norway Queen Maud Lodge No. 42 will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church, 1201 N. Saliman Road.


The group will celebrate the Grand Lodge's 100th birthday with a special cake, and learn to make Danish paper stars in several sizes. It will be a hands-on program.


Founded Oct. 20, 2001, the group presents programs to preserve Norwegian heritage; to maintain knowledge of the history, culture and language of Norway; and to build a support system and friendship within the group.


Women are invited to join the lodge that are of Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic heritage or who are married or have been married to a Norwegian, etc. For information, call 782-5259.




State museum opens new exhibits


The Nevada State Museum announces the opening of the exhibit "Selections from the Collections," featuring popular museum favorites, new donations and plans for future galleries in a combined exhibit from the Anthropology, History and Natural History program collections.


Datsolalee's degikup baskets form the centerpiece for Anthropology's "Selections from the Collections."


The museum will offer a series of gallery walks to interpret the pieces in the exhibit. The first gallery walk will focus on natural history and be led by Curator George Baumgardner at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. To register, contact Deborah Stevenson at 687-4810, ext. 237.


The museum is open from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and free for children under 18. Call 687-4810.




Subconservancy district meeting scheduled


The Carson Water Subconservancy District will meet 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 1214 of the Nevada State Legislative Building, 401 S. Carson St. The 2008 Andy Aldax Carson River Watershed Award for exemplary service in conservation and protection of the Carson River Watershed will be presented to Dan Kaffer. Eagles and Ag returns to Carson Valley


The Carson Valley agricultural and ranching community, the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, and several nature and wildlife groups will sponsor The Eagles and Agriculture event Wednesday-Sunday.


The Eagles and Agriculture tours and workshops focus on the influx of bald eagles and other birds of prey into the Carson Valley, where they flock to feed on the nutrient-rich afterbirth during the winter calving season. The kickoff tour costs $35 per person and includes luxury motor coach transportation along with expert guides on Carson Valley history and wildlife.
