A 24 percent hike in city sewer rates could combine with water rate hikes to cost Mission Industries more than $52,000 a year.

The board of supervisors approved a 6 percent water rate increase earlier this month and are scheduled to look at the sewer rate hike Thursday.

The rate increases will cost the average home user a few extra dollars a month, but for larger businesses like the Carson Nugget, Carson Regional Medical Center and Casino Fandango, these could add up to several thousand dollars a year.

Mission Industries, which supplies linens, would pay more than three times as much as the second most affected, the Carson Nugget.

Supervisors will also look at using eminent domain to take about 4,800 square-feet of land from Mission Industries for the Fairview Drive street-widening project.

City Manager Larry Werner has said Mission Industries, 1161 Fairview Drive, has been "very cooperative," and he doesn't think the city will actually have to take the land.

The city does need to have the land ready even if it does not reach an agreement with the business, because "timing is of the essence."

Traffic will increase on Fairview when the bypass reaches the street in 2009. The city has offered $430,000 for the land based on appraisal.

The business is owned by Las Vegas-based Mission of Nevada Inc.
