The students of Carson High continue to excel

Many congratulations go out this week to some of the fine young students of Carson High School.

Most recently, the Culinary ProStart teams and competed in 4 different categories at the state championships, winning an extraordinary total of $43,500 in scholarships.

The Culinary Management team consisting of Chase Losche, Jonathan Kane, Tracy Morris and Brittany Shirey took first place, each winning a $4,000 scholarship to Johnson and Wales, and $2,000 scholarships to the International Culinary School at Art Institute.

The Culinary Hot Foods Team of Brad Cobler, Nick Beaudette, Krystyne Basa and Elizabeth Lewis took second place in Hot Foods Category, each winning $4,000 in scholarships.

The Cake Decorating Team of Aaron Devalos and Allison Decampos took second and third respectively, each winning $500 in scholarships.

In the Knife Skills category, Collin Grischott came away with a second place finish earning a $500 scholarship.

Congratulations and good luck to instructor Penny Reynolds and her team of students as they prepare for the national competition in April. The culinary teams will be hosting a scrapbook event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. For a fee of $20 your can come scrapbook, have soup and salad bar lunch and win prizes.

Congratulations also go to NJROTC rifle team for placing second at the state championship last week at Reed High School. Of the six teams qualified to shoot in the match, Carson scored 1,287 points, just twelve behind champion Spanish Springs. Rachel Jeauxdevine won the trophy as the top shooter in the state; Richard Graves and Shane Higgins were selected to the second team all-state.

NHS advisor Angila Golik and officers Jenna Duralde and Meghan Craig appeared in Northport, N.Y., to accept the Ron Couture Spirit Award in January for their hard work and dedication in raising funds for ALS.

CHS all together raised $2,200 in a two-week period. The NHS now is moving its fundraising efforts towards fighting cancer. They will have five teams participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life this year, hoping to surpass last year's total of $22,000.

C-Unity is preparing for their upcoming events including the Fifth Grade Field Day. Sponsors are needed to help with the participant T-shirts. If you are interested please contact Sarah Piggott. As well, the eighth grade dance will be hosted at CHS in April.

CHS spring sports have kicked off with a bang, as tryouts were held in the snowy weather last weekend. Keep an eye out for your favorite spring sports including baseball, softball, track, swimming and boys golf.
