Aug. 9: A sesquicentennial ice cream social

The Carson City Historical Society will be host an Ice Cream Social at the Foreman-Roberts House, 1207 North Carson St., on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 6 -8 p.m. The cost of the event is $5 per family and includes ice cream, special desserts, tour of the Foreman-Roberts House and entertainment. Wally Earhart will appear as Abe Lincoln, the Civil War Re-enactors will be setting up camp, and Nevada 1st Calvary with their horses will be there. There will be a special appearance of David Bugli and his jazz trio. The Foreman-Roberts House will also be open for tours and will be featuring the Charles Lynch photo collection of early Carson City. RSVP to Gary Cain at 775-885-7643."

Aug. 14: A chautauqua on the city's first female newspaper editor

Susan J. Ballew will give a talk on Nellie Mighels Davis on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395 in Minden. The lecture/chautauqua presentation will focus on Nellie Mighels Davis. She and her husband, H. R. Mighels, were the first owners of the Carson Morning Appeal. In 1879 when H. R. Mighels passed away, Nellie became the owner of the Appeal and ran it until her marriage to Samuel Post Davis. The chautauqua chronicles her life story, her travels to Nevada in 1866, and life in the wild days of Carson City.

Susan J. Ballew is a columnist for the Nevada Appeal, Past President of the Carson City Historical Society, and docent at the Nevada State Museum. She has a Bachelors Degree from University of Nevada, and a Master Degree from San Diego State University.

10 a.m. Ð noon and 1-3 p.m.: Coin Press #1 Special Minting of the 150th Anniversary Commemorative Medallion

11 a.m. Ð noon: McAvory Lane as Mark Twain's Ghost at the Nevada State Museum

1 Ð 3 p.m. Abe Lincoln to greet visitors at the Nevada State Museum
