Battle Born Demons return to track

Reno's premier women's flat track roller derby team, the Battle Born Derby Demons, take to the track on June 28 for its second bout of the season in "Scars and Stripes." The BBDD are set to battle the Silicon Valley Rollergirls (SVRG) on the rink at City Plaza in downtown Reno.

The bout is in honor of the men and women of the Nevada Army National Guard. The Battle Born Derby Demons, a non-profit organization, has donated 150 free passes to active Nevada Army National Guard members.

"Defending the home turf takes on special significance because this one is dedicated to the brave men and women who protect and serve all of us: the armed forces," said Carrie Nole, who skates under the name of "Carrie Ammo." Her customized camouflage uniform reflects the entire team's support of the armed forces.

"This is going to be a great bout," said Lisa "Sadie Mae Gutz" Rodriguez of the SVRG, "Santa Cruz beat both us and BBDD by 11 points, so it's going to be an even match."

A portion of the proceeds from the bout will also go to Care Chest of Sierra Nevada which provides medical resources for individuals in need free of charge.

The event will feature live music by "Suffocate the Day," a beer garden, and food and merchandise vendors. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the bout begins at 7. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12, and free for children under age 6. Tickets may be purchased online at Brown Paper Tickets (www.brownpapertickets.com/event/36231) or at the gate. For more information, visit the BBDD website at www.battlebornderbydemons.com.

Members of the Nevada Army National Guard are asked to RSVP by June 22 to BattleBornDerby@yahoo.com and may pick up their reserve passes at Amendment 21, 421 So. Virginia Street at the corner of Virginia and Liberty after 2 p.m. on the day of the bout or at Will Call at the gate anytime after 6 p.m. on the day of the bout.
