Oodles of Noodles cooks sought

The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce is calling for contestants to join the 7th annual Oodles of Noodles Cook-off on May 10.

The deadline for entry is April 30; the entry fee is $50. After April 30 entry fee is $65. This event is a one-day event that combines good food and vendor and business booths.

The event will be held in Old Town Dayton on Logan Way and Pike Street. Set up on Friday afternoon is recommended. Booths will open at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. For information and application visit www.daytonnvchamber.org or call 246-7909.

Country club to hold wedding, prom expo

The Dayton Valley Golf and Country Club at Legado will hold a wedding and prom expo from 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

Food and bread bank open

The Dayton Food and Bread Bank will serve nonperishable foods to families and individuals in the Dayton community from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St., Dayton.

Bring proof of residency (utility bill, drivers license, pay-stub, etc.), income verification (Social Security Statement, unemployment verification, pay stub, etc.) and Social Security cards for each person you are listing in your household.

Writer to speak at Fallon Center

The Churchill Arts Council will present a prose reading with the award-winning writer Christopher Coake in the E.L. Wiegand Gallery at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., Fallon, from 5-7 p.m. today.

There will be a meet the author reception from 5-6 p.m., and the reading will begin at 6. The event is free and open to the public. Coake will also speak live on-the-air earlier in the day on KVLV radio. Call 423-1440.

Coake teaches in the writing program at the University of Nevada, Reno. His first book, a collection of short stories titled "We're in Trouble," was released in 2005 by Harcourt and he was chosen for GRANTA's 2007 list of "Best Young American Novelists."

Lake Lahontan site of Easter Egg Hunt

The Annual Lake Lahontan Easter Egg Hunt will be at 10 a.m. March 22 in the Day Use area of the park.

The egg hunt is organized for children ages one-day-old to fifth grade.

Reopening celebrated by grand ball Saturday night

A March Grand Ball will be held from 7:30-11 p.m. Saturday to celebrate the anniversary of the reopening and dedication of Piper's Opera House on March 6, 1885.

With Gus the Victorian Dance Master at the helm of the Victorian Orchestra, Piper's Opera House will celebrate the re-opening and dedication that took place 113 years ago.

Mountain Oyster Fry set for March 15

The 17th Mountain Oyster Fry begins at noon March 15 in Virginia City. New and experienced cooks will compete for bragging rights for Best Overall Taste, Best Booth, Most Creative and Best Presentation of lamb fries flown in from New Zealand.

Set-up for cooking "gonadologists" is 7 a.m. March 15, Bucket of Blood parking lot. $75 chef entry fee includes 20 pounds of lamb fries. A $250 cash grand prize will be awarded. There are a few cooking spots available for anyone who wants to compete.

St. Patrick's Day parade March 15

Virginia City will honor Storey County Commissioner John Flanagan as the grand marshal of its annual St. Patrick's Day Parade at noon, March 15.

Musicians, leprechauns and more are expected to be on hand to honor the green. The Mountain Oyster Fry is the same day.

Cross country ski and snowshoe tour

A 2.5 kilometer guided snowshoe trip or a 5K guided ski tour will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Skiers and snowshoers will meet at the Hope Valley Outdoor Center where skis and snowshoes can be rented.
