Oodles of Noodles cooks sought

The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce is calling for contestants to join the 7th annual Oodles of Noodles Cook-off on May 10.

The deadline for entry is April 30; the entry fee is $50. After April 30 entry fee is $65. This event is a one-day event that combines good food and vendor and business booths.

The event will be held in Old Town Dayton on Logan Way and Pike Street. Set up on Friday afternoon is recommended. Booths will open at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning. For information and application visit www.daytonnvchamber.org or call 246-7909.

Casino Night Fundraiser Saturday

The Dayton Kiwanis Casino Night and scholarship fundraiser will be 5 p.m. Sunday at the Dayton Senior Center, 320 Old Dayton Valley Road, Dayton.

Cost is $10, and include casino games such as craps, roulette, 21, and bingo.

A corned-beef sandwich dinner and no-host bar is included. Tickets are available at Desert Rose Chiropractic Center or at the door.

Food and bread bank open

The Dayton Food and Bread Bank will serve nonperishable foods to families and individuals in the Dayton community from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St., Dayton.

Bring proof of residency (utility bill, drivers license, pay-stub, etc.), income verification (Social Security Statement, unemployment verification, pay stub, etc.) and Social Security cards for each person you are listing in your household.

Canadian singer appears in Fallon

The Churchill Arts Council will present a performance by the Canadian Grammy-nominated Jazz vocalist Sophie Milman at the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Park St., Fallon April 12, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7 and there will be a no-host bar. Tickets are $17 for CAC members, $20 for non-members and $10 for children/students at (775) 423-1440.

Sophie Milman is a 25-year old, Russian-born, Canadian jazz sensation, whose debut release was included in Billboard's Top 15 for 2204.

Farmers Market seeks entrants

The Fernley Farmers Market is gearing up for the 2008 season and is looking for crafters, artisans, bakers, farmers and nonprofit organizations to join the market. St. Pat's dinner-dance Saturday

Feast on the traditional Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage at the St. Patrick's Day Dinner/Dance at 6:30 p.m. at the Fernley Community Center.

It includes an auction and raffle. Donations of food, prizes and cash are needed.

The event is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary #10247 and the Fernley-Wadsworth Lions Club, and money raised benefits veterans at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Reno.

Tea party, fashion show planned

Tickets are now on sale for the fourth Annual Mom and Me Tea Party, Luncheon & Fashion Show at 11:30 a.m. April 5 at the Fernley Community Center.

This year's theme is a Japanese tea ceremony.

Tickets can be purchased at Casa del Sol and at Mirage Gifts. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Checks can be made payable to the Fernley Improvement Club.

Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring one nonperishable food item for Fernley's Food Bank. People are also encouraged to bring their own favorite tea cup and saucer and the best one wins a prize.

Rural housing rep visiting

A representative from the Nevada Rural Housing Authority will be at the Fernley Senior Center at 2:30 p.m. March 26 to take applications for the program. The NRHA provides rental assistance to low-income families, elderly, and disabled persons. Call 887-1795.

BOR to meet on canal

The Bureau of Reclamation will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Fernley High School to discuss the future of the Truckee Canal after the Jan. 5 flood.

Since that time, the BOR has put together a team to assess a report submitted by a forensic team that investigated the canal break and federal officials are awaiting the team's recommendations.

The BOR also has packets available to flood victims that maybe file a claim under the Federal Torts Claim act. Call 884-8344.

Lake Lahontan site of Easter Egg Hunt

The Annual Lake Lahontan Easter Egg Hunt will be at 10 a.m. March 22 in the Day Use area of the park.

The egg hunt is organized for children ages one-day-old to fifth grade.

Developers speaking at Chamber meeting

Representatives for the Highlands Project, who are planning a subdivision north of Stagecoach, will speak at the Silver Springs Chamber of Commerce meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the McAtee Building to explain the proposed development.

The proposed development encompasses 20,000 acres, including 10,000 acres of residential communities and 10,000 for be open space.

Smith Valley

St. Patrick's dinner, auction on Sunday

The Smith Valley Friends of the Library will hold its 15th annual Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner and Auction on Sunday at the Community Hall in Wellington.

The event is the Friends' major fundraiser, and all proceeds go to the library in Smith.

A no-host bar will include beer, wine and soda and will begin at 4:30 p.m. Dinner is served family-style at 5:30 p.m. Cost for adults is $12.50, children under 12 is $5 and children under 5 will be admitted free.

Donation of auction items is needed. A silent auction will also be held. A quilt donated by the Pineneedlers quilting group will be raffled. Tickets are $5 each of five for $20 and may be obtained from any member of the quilting group, friend of the library, or at the library.

Stagecoach

Author to hold workshop for teens.

A three-day creative writing workshop with author Terri Farley will take place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. March 25-27, at the Boettcher family's new youth recreation room.

It will include lunch and snacks.

Farley's work has been nominated for an American Library Association best book for young adults, and she has been very active in the Wild Horse Preservation League of Dayton and has degrees in both English and Journalism.

The workshop is for middle- and high-school teens from Lyon County. It is limited to 30 teens. Call 577-5009 ext. 24 to register.

Storey GOP to hold convention

Mountain Oyster Fry set for Saturday

The 17th Mountain Oyster Fry begins at noon Saturday in Virginia City. New and experienced cooks will compete for bragging rights for Best Overall Taste, Best Booth, Most Creative and Best Presentation of lamb fries flown in from New Zealand.

Set-up for "gonadologists" is 7 a.m., Bucket of Blood parking lot. $75 chef entry fee includes 20 pounds of lamb fries. A $250 cash grand prize will be awarded. There are a few cooking spots available for anyone who wants to compete.

St. Patrick's Day parade Saturday

Virginia City will honor Storey County Commissioner John Flanagan as the grand marshal of its annual St. Patrick's Day Parade at noon, March 15.

Musicians, leprechauns and more are expected to be on hand to honor the green. The Mountain Oyster Fry is the same day.

Comstock to host Easter egg hunt

The Great Virginia City Easter Egg Hunt for children under 10 will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Miner's Park at E and Mill streets, Virginia City.

More than 1,000 real and plastic eggs will be hidden in the park area. Some of plastic eggs will contain the name of a store; those collecting those eggs can go to the store listed in their egg and win a free prize.
