Locals continue to shine for Nevada baseball

Local players continued to shine for the University of Nevada baseball team over the last two days in its intrasquad scrimmage series.

On Tuesday the Bowmans " Willie and Matt " had strong days as the White beat the Blue 9-3.

Freshman lefthanded pitcher Jacob Anderson of Galena was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on four hits.

Center fielder Waylen Sing Chow led off with a hole run in the first inning to give the White a 1-0 lead. White shortstop Kevin Rodland went 2-for-4 with a homer and second baseman Nick Leid was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Bowmans led the Blue. Willie, a Cason High graduate who was playing shortstop, strengthened his case to make the squad by going 2-for-2 while Dayton's Matt, who played second base, added an RBI double.

On Monday, Western Nevada College's Tyson Jaquez continued his hot hitting in the white's 8-6 win. Chow and Leid were among the leaders for the white as they both went 2-for-4.

Jaquez, who is playing third base, led the blue as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI. In the first three contests of the series, Jaquez went 8-for-12 with five RBI and three doubles. Blue centerfielder Westley Moss also had three hits and a run in Monday's contest.

The five-contest series and Nevada's fall practice will conclude today with the final conteset at 9 a.m. at Peccole Park. The contest is open to the public and admission is free.

Stephe Bautista, who pitched for the Nevada Bighorns this past summer, will start for the white. In the opening contest of the series, Bautista pitched five shutout innings, allowing just one hit.
