Nevada Appeal Staff Report

Western Nevada College's Tyson Jaquez and former Carson High School standout Willie Bowman had strong showings in the University of Nevada baseball team's blue-white intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday.

The blue beat the white 16-8 in the first of a five-scrimmage series that will conclude fall practice. Another scrimmage will be held at 9 a.m. today before a break is taken over the weekend. All the scrimmages are being played at Peccole Park and are free to the public.

On Thursday, the white led 2-0 after five innings before the blue exploded for 11 runs in the sixth inning. Tyler Rogstad was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on three hits over five innings.

Stephen Bautista, who pitched for the Nevada Bighorns this past summer, was outstanding for the white, pitching five innings of one-hit, shutout baseball before leaving.

Jaquez, who is playing third base, went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI and Nick Melino went 2-for-3 with six RBI to lead the blue. Bowman, who's trying to make the Nevada squad, played shortstop and added a solo home run for the Blue. For the white, Brock Stassi hit a three-run homer and Kevin Rodland added a solo shot.

Starting pitchers for today's contest will be Chris Garcia, who also pitched for the Bighorns this past summer, for the blue, and Carson High graduate Tony Fagan for the white.
