Wildcats baseball swept; softball concludes fall ball

The Western Nevada College baseball team dropped a pair of scrimmages to Feather River College Sunday in Quincy, Calif.

The Golden Eagles took the opener, 5-0, and won the nightcap, 5-4, to win three-of-four over the weekend.

The Wildcats are now 13-4 and will finish off the season on the road against Modesto Community College with a three-game series over Friday and Saturday.

WNC starter Kramer Champlin pitched three scoreless innings in the opener, but the Wildcats offense was unable to help Will Schumacker, who surrendered four runs and three hits.

Lance Ray went 2-for-4 and Jay Skilton, Marshall Kennebrew and Travis Feiner each added a hit for the Wildcats, but couldn't get any runners across the plate.

Jeff Barto took the loss for WNC in game two, allowing three runs over three innings. He gave up five hits and struck out two while allowing no walks.

After Feather River got on the board first in the opening inning, the Wildcats struck for two runs in the top of the second frame.

The Golden Eagles regained the lead with a two-run third and added two more runs in the sixth.

WNC's C.J. Maldonado went 1-for-3 in the nightcap, hitting a two-run single in the top of the eight to close the gap to 5-4, but the Wildcats could come no closer.

Mike Long had a solid second game for WNC, going 1-for-1 with three walks, an RBI, two stolen bases. He also scored a run.

Brett Moravic went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

Mike Stiles also got a hot a hit for the Wildcats.

WNC SOFTBALL

The Western Nevada College softball team held its own against two of Northern California's top teams as it concluded its fall scrimmage scheduled against Cosumnes Community College and Ohlone College.

After losing to Ohlone 3-0, the Wildcats tied Cosumnes 5-5 in a game they could have easily won as they had four baserunners thrown out, including three at home plate.

After Cosumnes took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, WNC cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second. Devin Steelman, who went 3-for-3, singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. WNC took a 3-2 lead in the third in Ambar Huish's RBI double and Steelman's RBI triple.

The Wildcats went up 4-3 in the fourth on Lisa Senko's RBI double and Steelman hit a solo home run in the fifth to give WNC a 5-3 lead. Cosumnes scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score 5-5 and that's how the scored stayed for the rest of the game.

Annalee Rubio gutted it out on the mound for WNC as she was able to scatter 13 hits in pitching a complete game over seven innings. Rubio also doubled, Huish had two hits and Christa Casci added a hit as WNC banged out eight hits.

OHLONE 3, WNC 0

WNC was able to muster just one hit as Rubio had the hit for the Wildcats. Alyson Herman allowed three unearned runs on the mound.

"Herman pitched great," WNC coach Dick Allen said.
